I have two different friends who will be having new babies in August and September, and would like to give them a gift (under $50). I am thinking of getting them a book on caring for their babies, along with something else. What is a gift that would be appreciated? Also, does anyone know of some good baby books? Thanks.

Back in the 6ix
Get them a gift certificate at Gymboree, there is one in Yorkdale, and let them decide. Always works for me and they are always appreciative.

Between a rock and a hard place
The best gift for new parents is a baby bag. One with lots of pockets and pouches. Fill it with sample sizes of various products they are going to need. Baby powder, zinc cream, disposable wipes, washcloths, a couple of bottles, rings, nipples, teething rings, a couple of snap rompers, a rattle, thermometer, baby aspirin, and you get the idea...

That way you can set your spending limit. It will save them running out for small things they are bound to need but not have at first, and give them an advance notice of stuff they will need to buy on an ongoing basis.

Tranquility Base, La Luna
Open a trust account in the kid's name
deposit $100 in it
get the parents to deposit all baby bonus checks in it
The kid will have over $20,000 when they reach adulthood, all tax free.

A book on raising kids suggests they are too stupid to rasie one. I am partial to giving a silver baby spoon with the childs initals engraved in it along with the D.O.B

Beatcha you were wondering where the "born with a silver spoon in mouth" term came from. Well turns out that silver is a natural antibiotic and that during the plague the wealthy would put silver spoons in their baby's mouths. Subsiquently very few of the rich died from the plague. So perhaps a silver baby spoon is a good gift.
