one can go to ebay.ca or ebay.com and do search for gmail -

but what is the situation with invites - are invites still valid, or is it a case that the guys here have used up the ones they are allowed to give?

Once you have gmail for a certain amount of time you get three invites. Some people who have had gmail for a long time have been given more when their quota is used up.

According to a gmail mailing list I belong to, Google has set aside X amount for its employees, a lesser amount for people it deems important and an even lesser amount for the beta testers. The people on this list who have had gmail for a while say they haven't received any more offers of invites.

Who knows? Maybe gmail is holding back so it can get more publicity about those outrageous amounts people were paying on ebay? It won't matter though because hopefully everyone will be eligible within a few months.

Yahoo now provides 100MB with every free account, so you could literally fill up multiple accounts by continually forwarding from your regular account to a series of sequentially numbered Yahoo accounts as necessary. And to be quite honest, I don't find Gmail to be all that impressive besides the insane amount of space (which isn't as insane since Yahoo and Homail are following suit).
