Hello gentlemen of the terb site. I have been reading a lot of reviews lately and it seems as though many of you like to go down on your sp's. Is there any concern of getting an std from this (a la herpes or warts)? I considered this when I heard Colin Farrell remark on his cold sore "I went down for lunch at the wrong place".
This is of interest to me because I want to hire an sp for some lesbian action. I have a feeling that medicated cream on my lips three times a day might sully the experience.

It appears to be common practice. Not universal but very common.

Most would agree there is some risk involved and each person decides what an acceptable level of risk is for them. My take on it, by no means scientific, is that contracting STD's via DATY has not been a major problem.

I wouldn't brush my teeth immediately before seeing someone because the stimulation could start a bit of bleeding. Use mouthwash or gum to freshen your breath.
Check her pussy visually, give it the quick sniff test. Your own saliva helps keep you somewhat protected, but there are still some risks involved.
Then dive in!

Stomach Acid kills germs that enter the mouth but if you obviously have something funky happening in your mouth than chances are you might catch something if you're not careful!

Nothing better than a clean shaves p u s s y that tastes like honey! :)

The only thing that is even partially close to being safe during f/m or f/f oral sex is to use a latex barrier - aka a dental dam. You can purchase them at almost any sex shop, and I believe I even saw them for sale at the Shoppers in the Eaton's center. You can also make one out of saran wrap, although I've read that this isn't an impermiable barrier.

None of the woman I know would be at all offended if you requested a dental dam be used - although, it would a good thing to let her know this in advance, so that she can make sure she has one on hand. Better still, bring your own, new in the box dental dams with you, just in case she doesn't have the right supplies at hand.

Of course, to be 110% safe the only real solution is complete abstinence. Barring that, and if you prefer the taste and smell and feel of the woman you're with, sans saran, the Hassle Free clinic pages have some tips on visually inspecting your partner to minimize risk.

Yikes! With all due respect to your professional qualifications, ma'am, a saran-wrap dental dam offers about as much protection as a saran-wrap condom (ie almost no protection at all).

Today's amateur public-health message: use the right equipment for the job (or go bare with all the attendant risks)

I prefer duct tape condoms; they never slip off, and I get a brazilian wax treatment after the main event.
Aww...I thought that was my special secret. Now everybody's going to be using them...:p

"Is there any concern...?" Yes, there is, but it is so small relative to other protective measures you should take, that I don't usually hesitate go go-down given the invitation.

Colin Farrell was just trying to be comedic, for his cold sore was far more likely the result of his kissing someone on the lips once upon a time than of going-down. In addition, since roughly 75% to 85% of everybody already has herpes symplex I (oral herpes), and because it is very difficult for the opposite strain of herpes to take root where one strain already exists, the chances of acquiring herpes orally from the genitals of another are even further reduced.

The truth is that yes, there is minimal concern, but still "concern".

Myself, I think you should check visually for anything obvious and then, barring any cause for pause, should go at her with unrestrained delight!

If you find yourself still wary, then use Saran wrap and reduce those minimal risks to almost nil.

This, of course, is the statement of the uneducated.

But hey, TERB has no requirements as to grade level completed, and of course you get what you pay for.

Who hath shat in thy cornflakes, brother?

Since you asked so politely, I'll see what data I can find on pore sizes in Saran vs latex. I could be wrong (hey, it happens) and I might wind up learning something new. That's the great thing about ignorance - it can be cured.

Stupidity, on the other hand...

So after a crazy month or so I'm back with an answer. Unfortunately, the answer is "I don't know..."

I checked the literature (no seriously, I did!), looked for technical data on pore sizes of condoms versus Saran(tm) wrap and asked the preceptor who originally told me about this. I don't have anything, other than anecdotes, to back up my assertion and don't have any hard data to disprove it either. It seems to be a terribly over-looked area of research...

I'll retract my original assertion, and hope that if I ever meet ME in person that she won't bruise my derriere too much...

I haven't looked here in ages, but I just returned to tip my hat to Ducttape, for his efforts in looking into the matter of Saran Wrap.

I recall a woman I once knew who, upon first hearing of the Saran Wrap option, was quick to phone her local health department (std unit) and was then surprised to hear how common it was to use Saran Wrap as a barrier for oral sex on women.

Those old commercials for Saran Wrap's main use, with jello in a bowl, upside down and yet held tight, certainly imply that Saran Wrap is much more reliable than say Swiss Cheese. Also, no question that food is routinely stored under Saran Wrap and kept fresh that way.

I cannot say for sure that microscopic holes aren't in there, or that you positively could """never""" acquire an STD despite the use of Saran Wrap.

I know some on some of these boards are fond of believing that "...condoms don't guard against Herpes...", when nothing could be less accurate. I'd suggest that Saran Wrap is more effective against orally transmitted STD's than condoms are against Herpes.

Both are pretty darn reliable, and yet some people get Herpes symplex II on their panty line or in some other far-from-Mecca location.

It is a matter of each person weighing his or her risk-reward ratio.

But I'm glad you looked into it, even if you weren't able to find anything that was crystal clear.

Hats off for trying to get some usefull information. That reminds me tomorrow to search under the terms pourosity and permiability as well.

Concerns over pore size are usually in connection to HIV because because the virus is especially tiny. But the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex is very low even with no protection. If it were only HIV, I wouldn't hesitate to risk either BBBJ or DATY. With oral, I'm more worried about Herpes, Hep & Syphillis, which are easier to transmit by this method. But these viruses are supposed to be easier to block than HIV, aren't they?

I really doubt you'd get HIV from unprotected oral sex. If you make a regular practice of it with people who make a regular practice of it then you should count on eventually getting something non-fatal but unpleasant. The odds of getting something uncomfortable from a single encounter are low. Multiplied by enough encounters with enough different people it eventually becomes a statistical certainty.

This article confirms that if you have #1, cold sores once in your life you have some immunity towards #2 ...just like was suggested in the previous post. Interesting article for those of you who love the DATY.
