i need to buy clubs. I have no desire to take up this sport but need to for work. I would like to start now. Any leads on reasonable deals or hint on what to look for. May even consider used set if looks good.

If you have no desire to take up the sport, why not rent a set? You could try Play It Again or something like that, and probably get a set quite cheap.

If you don't want to spend $500 on an inexpensive starter set... go to some pro shops at golf clubs in your area. At this time of the year... they have demos available at 50% or less than the original price.

I have a set of Wilson golf clubs for sale. I haven't used them since the "warden" and I split up, 2 years ago. I no longer need an excuse to get out of the house. Hotel CB rocks :D

You can get lots of complete starter sets, with a bag, for around $200. (I saw a couple at Nevada Bob's downtown.) It's all you need until you determine that you decide to seriously take up the game. Or not.

A number of Nevada Bob's locations around the GTA are having a huge closing sale. There are some great deals to be had.

thanks for the info so far, i've been checking the web sites of the suggested places as they came in including ebay, craigslist and kijiji. I'll check out nevada bobs outlet store Sat. I Already hit golf town last weekend as a starting point. I will probably own a set of clubs by sat afternoon. What are the must have accessories in your opinion.

All you really need is a set of clubs, a bag, golf shoes, a glove if you choose to wear one, and a steady supply of balls and tees.
If you will mostly be playing "business golf", you'll likely be in a cart most of the time, so you won't need a pull cart.

Watch out for Play It Again Sports. Some of their brand name clubs (Callaway, Taylormade) they are selling are fakes. Most likely traded in by someone to an unsuspecting sales clerk.

GolfTown usually has their demo sell-offs in November but if you don't care if it's last year's model etc, Golf Town is your better option. Nevada Bob's closing down sale was garbage. Not much to be saved there. Greenfield Golf (Woodbine north of 14th Ave) had a big sale a couple weeks ago. You should still be able to find some deals.
Look up Toronto Golf Nuts and check out the Buy/Sell/Trade section for some really good deals.

Because you're newbie to the game, if you buy your clubs from GolfTown, they can rough fit you into a set. If you end up liking the game and decide to invest in more time and lessons and groove a more repeatable swing, get properly fitted for your clubs by a reputable fitter.

Thinking of just having clubs and just using it only for playing for business purposes can backfire sometimes. If the people you're doing business with or thinking of doing business with play a lot of golf and are fairly decent players, they may find your hacking around the course irritating, especially having to watch you struggle for 4.5hrs. I know 'cause there are a lot of prominent CEO's, judges, brokers etc that I've played with at the club I belong to. They'll know a beginner when they see one and know if you're trying to BS 'em if you make excuses. With golf, you only get out of it what you're willing to put into it. Not saying you need to become Tiger Woods good. Just proficient enough to be repetitive. You can get a package of 5 lessons from GolfTown or even Markham Dome (Carl Forman is a great instructor) or up at Angus Glen (PV is another great instructor esp for beginner level).

Good luck.

Good golf clubs only make good golfers better.

Stick with cheap clubs that feel good in your hands. Try Walmart, Canadian Tire, etc. as they have good deals. I got a set and bag for $300 and is good for me right now. The point is consistency. Everytime you pick up the clubs they feel the same so you will get more consistent.

Once you get consistent, then good clubs will help your game more.

I think it was John Daly who said that even the cheapest clubs available today are 10 times better than anything produced 30 years ago. If my memory is correct, there were some damn good golfers back then too.

Hi jiiimmm,

Since you have 280 posts, I can tell you're comfortable with this website format.

You can go to the www.torontogolfnuts.com forum and check out all of the areas. It's similar to TERB, but it's all about golf rather than hobbying. Lots of good advice, reviews and good deals on golf clubs, courses, etc.

I spend about an equal amount of time on both, and I think that says alot about my two obsessions.

Have fun.
