RIM adopts BlackBerry as official company name

WATERLOO – Say goodbye to Research In Motion as a corporate name.

Say hello to BlackBerry as the new handle for the company that created the smartphone space in mobile communications.

In a historic and symbolic decision announced today as part of the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 smartphone, RIM said it is officially changing its name to BlackBerry.

The moniker that carried the company through its first 29 years of history is gone.

In many countries of the world, the BlackBerry name has a much higher profile than Research In Motion, Frank Boulben, the company’s chief marketing officer, said in an interview.

“When you travel around the world, you go to South Africa, South America, BlackBerry is the leading brand in the category. In Europe, we are known only as BlackBerry,” he said.

“It really seemed to me to be the obvious thing to do given the stature of our brand.”

I think it is short sighted and dumb at first blush. It makes as much sense as Apple changing their name to iPhone or Samsung to Galaxy to improve cell phone sales. Let's hope their new product strategy is a little deeper than this.

Kinda like when "Brewer's Retail" changed their name to "The Beer Store" because everyone called it, you guessed it "The Beer Store".

Samsung sells appliances, TVs, Computers, and..... Galaxy

Name recognition of Blackberry consistently ranks amongst the top 10 most recognized company/product names worldwide.
RIM consistently struggles to break into the top 100.

Good move. I hope they get that turnaround.

I'm happy with my iphone and my Android but I like the looks and reviews of the new Blackberry models.

My reaction is that " Holy crap, RIM is betting the farm on BB"

RIM was more than just BB. It could have refocused as a tech innovator.

Good luck to them.

That's my point, they have the tablet and other optional revenue streams including possible licensing the technology & server features for Android/Windows phones. BlackBerry is one product now tied by a noose to the whole company. They could have sold the manufacturing portion and RIM continued with mobile innovation.

They should just call it RIP, only need to change 1 letter.
Maybe Thurston Howell III or whatever his name is should consider it.

If they had thought of the name Blackberry before the name Research In Motion, they never would have picked RIM.
