London Times:

Google hoped it would be able to deliver uncensored search results to Chinese users via its servers in Hong Kong, which, although part of China, enjoys a degree of autonomy within the “one country, two systems” framework.

But it seemed clear last night that China’s communist authorities have the power and the technology to block any [HK] data reaching the mainland.

The “Great Firewall of China” was as efficient as ever, as The Times established this morning when logging on to the [HK Google] search engine from Beijing. When trying to search for sensitive topics, such as “Dalai Lama” and “Tiananmen Square Massacre”, a message flashed up saying that the page could not be displayed. The computer then froze.

Seriously, I think the moving of servers thingy is just a public sand in ya face gesture from Google to China. They know very well that the PRC is still able to block regardless.

I wonder what exactly caused the fall out between the two. Was really disappointed with Google when they first went along with PRC.

My impression was that the Hong Kong route was an attempt to stay in business and let China "save face" because HK is still under China's control. But the Communists are not amused and it looks like they will soon block all traffic to Google's servers in HK.
