Technology has enabled greater levels of communication than ever. Even right now, we're conveying a piece of information that wouldn't be easy to do so without the internet.

The internet has truly changed the way we communicate. We may still have barriers to communication such as differing languages, and there have been online text translators available for free online for years. The next big step is a live translation of spoken language from one to the other.

Through Google's work into translation and voice recognition, the company today released a new version of Google Translate for Android that features a conversation mode that allows English and Spanish speakers to communicate to one another in their native tongues via the app.

and the world gets a little smaller once again.

Just like in the WW2 movies, the Aliens knew how to speak English.
Its amazing how the Germans lost when they were so much smarter than the Allies and they had those sophisticated aristocratic British accents.
They Spoke German, French, English Spanish and even Italian, but they get their asses kicked in every movie.
Many of the Allied soldiers didn't even speak English very well.

The application is not just for English and Spanish speakers, it translates all kinds of languages. I speak a bit of Portuguese and tested it today and worked!!! I couldn't believe it!!!

Nice.

Am I the only one amazed by the world around me? How does any of this shit work? I went to the ATM machine today, put in a plastic card and got money out of the machine. How the fuck does it do that? A series of 1's and 0's or something like that, right?Man made miracles (read: ingenuity) all around us. I don't have the IQ to understand the stuff, but I'm happy as fuck that it works and that things are constantly improving. Thank you Lord Jesus.

Unless this is a development that is "light years" ahead of present "mechanical translators" there are going to be problems, not only with synonyms but in this instance with verbal “sound alikes” as well.

Google's translators deal with the homonyms the same way people do, by being context aware, and using the choice that predominates in other occurrances of the same word and it's surrounding phraseology—only Google's uses more sources and checks them faster.

Oh man I don't want to get into a geek-out here, but how did it work in episodes when communicators were confiscated or rendered useless? I can think of at least of half a dozen episodes where communicators did not work or were confiscated on some alien planet, or on some alien ship.
geek-out ON ! I remember two episodes where the Aliens did not know English - the rock eating thingy (silicon based of course) and the hissing lizard which Kirk spared after a fight monitored by English super spooks.

I was actually surprised not at the English spoken by newly discovered species but by the super hot chicks that all had an aversion to clothing. And none were like transsexuals but anatomically correct females. Kirk boldly when where no man had gone but never ended up with an alien penis down his throat or up his ass.

Ok - geek-out OFF ;)

Its great! But I'm sure if I start using my data plan abroad it'll be costly :-(
Yeah, this is what sucks about Google Translate on android, it needs the network... although most Android phones these days do WIFI, if you could find a WIFI hotspot you'd be in business.

If it could only translate some fucking idiot that called me with some "voice changer" threatening me with something i couldnt really understand. It was like one of those voices you hear on a kidnapping movie.Sorta like Charlie Browns teacher but not as funny. No idea what a kidnapper would want with me. Hoping it was a wrong number lol. It was funny because he/she sounded mad but couldnt understand his message really. I have the number saved but just keeping it in case. Apparently there IS an app for that :)

Too bad, I was hoping it would be a stand alone, however I imagine the database would be too large to be able to do that for now.
