I bought a Magellan from Costco for 459 that was 800 just last summer. Has worked great in Toronto calgary San fran and New York so far.
Hard to argue with the Costco return policy.

I have always wondered, how good are the maps in these GPS units? Which units know all the little side streets in the area?

I would like a unit that covers Southern Ontario pretty thoroughly, including all those annoying small little towns and the back country roads.

Thanks for any help.

Looking to purchase a GPS device as a gift for a friend this Christmas, but having never shopped for these type of devices I am at a loss. Any recommendations from my fellow TERBites is greatly appreciated. The only specification I can think of right now is that it has to be "sexy." Thanks for your help guys and gals.
Just buy a map and a highlighter. As for the "sexy" component, throw in an issue of Playboy.

Just to clarify, will this be for in-car use only, or for boating/hiking? For the latter, I bought a Garmin 76CSx last spring that I thought was great. Then it started telling me that I was miles from where I knew I was. Garmin said to do a firmware download, and it locked up and is now useless. Garmin said that's my fault (by following their instructions?), and I'd have to pay for an out-of-warranty repair. I don't think so. I haven't had the time to fight with them yet. It was very nice for a while. The topographic maps include all of Canada, with good street detail, although without the routing or voice that the cars units have. Nautical charts seem very expensive since they only unlock one expensive area at a time.

Speaking of GPS, what is a good Laptop GPS receiver for use with Maps? I want to use the Laptop in the car to give me turn-by-turn voice directions.

Meister, my suggestion, get a separate unit entirely.
That way you can use it for hikes, walks, trips etc.
You won't limit yourself to a big laptop.

I suggest going to the place where l69norm suggested. They were quite knowledgeable, and professional. I am very satisfied with my purchase through them (so far).

I don't know how suitable most cars ones are for hiking. I'd rather have something waterproof (just in case), and I'd sure wouldn't want a hard drive in it, like a lot of the cars units have. If the Garmin unit I bought worked, it would be perfect for me (where in-car use is minimal, and I don't want spoken directions).

They do have portable hand held ones that come with mounts for the car.
I'd much rather go that route, that way you have it for, hikes, car, and whatever else - boating (for positioning).
Laptop, ehhh, big and cumbersome.

I have the exact same thing. However, there are certain areas in Stoufville that's not mapped properly by the unit's map. Also finding the exact address is not that great. For example, my friend lives in the house number 11, but the GPS says that his house is number 19. :p The same goes to my house, it's off by several houses.

So much for "3-meter accuracy"
