I am thinking about getting a GPS. With so many types available it is confusing and I am not sure what to get. Any recommendations?

- I want one that I can use in Europe as well.
- What are the advantages/disadvantages of SD cards v/s dvd?
- Explanations of different mapping systems.
...and whatever info you might think of.

Thanks

Don't go cheap. If you want Europe coverage, take the advanced models that have both NA and Europe loaded. Once you compare price at this level, they are pretty much the same and your choice becomes which interface do you like better. I have had a couple, settled on the TomTom. Liked the options, size, screen and map representations. I have used it several times in rural France, Spain, and it is dead accurate.

I've used the TomTom had to change from a onexl to a 720 or 920 because needed one that had 4GB of ram for the newer maps. OneXL only could take up to a 2GB SD card couldn't do SDHC. Maps just keep growing.

I've had a Garmin 250 which was stolen and now a 265. I find the Garmin easy to use.

The 265 has FM traffic receiver, which is only good for the Gardiner and the DVP in this part of the world, so I would not really recommend that feature. But what it does have that is great, is bluetooth and it integrates well with my Blackberry. Now that the Nanny State under Premier McSquinty has legislated that I can't use my crackberry except in hands free mode, the Garmin does double duty.

The fault I do find with the Garmin is that both models wanted me to get into the 401 collectors all the time, when I clearly wanted to zoom from Mississauga to Whitby. Also, I find that the new interchanges that have recently opened have not been upgraded in the maps.

If you do go Garmin, get a W or wide edition of the model you want. I find the abcde configuration drives me nuts when I am so use to QWERTY on on my other devices.

I would not hesitate to recommend Garmin.

Garmin 670 got both NA and Europe maps. Works great and it has other goodies: MP3, Pics, Coordinates display, Traffic.....

I have had Garmin for years. Love them. That being said, get a brand name from one of the top three brands. Don't cheap out.

I love my TomTom T720. It has bluetooth and I could sync my KRAZR and use it for hands free cell phone. Was nice. Then I went to a LG Dare and it won't sync. You might look into that if you want hands free calling.

MS Street & Trips 2009 with Plug-In GPS Receiver $74.99

You can put it in your laptop or netbook.

Anyone use this?
What are your thoughts on this?
Streets and Trips is great for route planning. I used it to plot out my drive to Florida. You can specify how many hours you want to drive per day, and have it schedule breaks every few hours if you wish.

You can even enter in the size of your gas tank and your approximate fuel efficiency, and it will warn you where you are likely to run low on gas.

With an internet connection, you can also download construction information.

If you use it for work and have to visit a lot of different addresses, you can simply enter all of them into Streets and Trips and it will figure out the most efficient route for you to take to visit each location.

There is also the added benefit of being able to plot out a trip using a larger screen and an actual keyboard, rather than trying to do that on a small touch screen.

Negatives? Well, if you plan to use it on the road, you need space in your vehicle for the laptop.

Some Garmin devices support importing routes created in Streets and Trips. That's what I do for road trips. I don't take my laptop in the car with me.

The Garmin clearly feels that when you need a guide to tell you how to get from Mississauga to Whitby- you are obviously not bright enough to travel the Express Lanes...

Of course I am bright enough to use the express. In fact, I'm even bright enough to move to the collector if the express is backed up due to an accident.

My point was that the Garmin can't seem to decide which is the best way to use the 401 across the top of Toronto, a programming issue.
