Our Military isn't what it used to be thanks to many years of neglect under various PM's.
But at 1 time they were fierce men and women who fought for freedom.
You got to wonder why Canadians only celebrate our Vets for a few hours 1 day of the year.
This is the 80th year of the liberation on the Netherlands.

One thing to recall is that when Canadian Forces liberated the Dutch from the Nazis, the Dutch were in the process of being starved every winter.
Canadian units fed a lot of the dutch in the early days and that was PR gold.

Once upon a time Canadian patriots risked their lives for freedom . Now they fly the flag upside down and whine about anti-vax freedom.

The Canadians were sent in to liberate Holland after the Americans got their asses handed to them at The Battle of Arnhem. Does anyone remember the Canadian General who accepted the surrender of German forces?

Meanwhile the Glorious King of Kings will get a military parade on his birthday,

I had a history teacher in high school who was a child in the Netherlands during WW2. He talked often of the Canadian soldiers liberating his town. I have a friend who is an immigrant from Holland. He was born after the war but his parents and siblings told him stories about the liberation of their town. The soldiers gave chocolates to the children. They said it was the sweetest thing they ever ate.

I think it was Genaral Harry Crerar.
I lived on a street named after him going to Uni in Ottawa in the late 80's.
And I looked him up back then, pre internet days.

What? Feeding starving kids makes them like you? And never forget you? Not according to DJT...lol.
Seriously though -
in the USA it is surprising how many don't know how active/at the forefront the Canadians were in Normandy and through the European theater (of course as RAF etc pilots after 1939) in that war. It's a shame because the Canadian Army seemed to acquit itself extremely well.
Scotty from Star Trek lost a finger there.
And in the movies their hand to hand instructor gave Claude Akins a whupping...

I had a vacation to retrace the steps of the Canadian army thru the Netherlands and the Normandy coast a few years ago. It was the greatest history lesson on Canadian involvement in WW2 that I couldn’t have imagined.

It also shames our public school system from how fast they gloss over the victories and sacrifices ordinary men from Canada made to stop the nazis. The Abbey of Arden is very somber and never once mentioned in my highschool education.

I highly recommend anyone go.

I was trying to find out where the Regina Rifles fought. I didn't have much luck. Well. some. But the website is pretty basic. Ah.
Regina Rifles travel back to Dutch village of Eede to mark 80 years since liberation
