Something is rotten in the cradle of western civilization.
For many years now the governments of Greece and Spain have been taking handsome kickbacks from developers. An area of open forest is then rezoned after developers have sent in arsonists to set the forests ablaze. In the last ten days five forest fires have ignited simultaniously across Southern Greece. The winds coming in from the Aegean along with a high pressure system that's blocking rainfall have created a perfect firestorm. From the island of Ebiza to the Strait of Corinth and throughout the Peleponesse, Greece appears to be going up in smoke. Firefighters fought a desperate battle to save Ancient Olympia from inciniration, they were successfull but it was a hollow victory. So far 63 people have died and no cost has yet to be affixed to the distruction of property.
Greeks are outright disgusted with goverment officials; when they appear at a disaster area they spit on them en mass. When Canada offered Greece some of it's crack firefighting units along with a dozen Canadair Waterbombers, they were refused. In spite of all the devestation, someone is getting very rich.
