What a lot of people don't know -- and something I've had heated arguments with people about -- is that Canada's official name is still "The Dominion of Canada".
Although the government switched to calling Canada simply just "Canada" on official documents some time after the Second World War, the country's offical name of "Dominion of Canada" has never been taken off the books.

Thanks. Didn't know that. So, that was and still is before the great province of Newfoundland and Labrador joined the confederation.

Another factoid I'm surprised many Canadians are unaware of is that Newfoundland was also briefly a sovereign dominion and, thus, its own country from 1907 to 1934, with its own government and prime ministers.
Most Canadians know of Newfoundland's colonial status, but many are unaware it was also a dominion, just like Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
