Is it just me, or were movies better twenty years ago?

What happened to Hollywood?

Hard to come up with something original when there has been so many movies and ideas already covered. There were much better up to 5-10 years ago. Now is the day of the remake, sequel or alternate versions. Once every couple months we get something new, great and very creative.
Well, theres that and all the pencil pushing accountants. Some movies, have great scripts and acting. But they suffer in funding. So all the special effects and whats not is just not there.

It just seems to me that nowadays when movies are made they just aren't given the resources that they should have. Most movies nowadays are just fillers. Something mediocre to play in the theater until something really good comes along. Hollywood seems more interested in quantity rather than quality. Which I guess is better from a financial point of view (but thats about it, it's mostly crap).

Unfortunately it is far deeper then that. Hollywood makes movies depending on what will make money and they seldom delve into the world of indie film making. If there was more money put into the finding of good indie work hollywood would be very interesting. However, they don't, they still put money into the scripts they think people will like instead of testing boundaries and stretching the imagination or tolerance an audience may have. I mean look at the recent growth in popularity of animated films. This is because not only is it original but alot of money goes into them to make sure they appeal to audiences of all levels. Hollywood needs to start putting the power back into the writers hands, and show the world more indie creativity rather then remakes, sequals, or different versions of old films. Plus there needs to be a closer bond between writing and directing so the writers film actually makes it to the screen rather then some director or producer buying scripts and then trying to convey them into film, or god forbid make them "better" by changing it or adding their own spin. Hollywood has become less creative, but that doesn't mean the talent or material isn't out there just waiting to be found.

I don't think it's any better or worse than a generation ago.
Every year we tend to get at least 5 great movies, you have to look beyond the blockbusters and remakes.
There is a large volume of crap to sift through, that's increased in the last few year, I'll agree.

I disagree, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas used to be talented, they are both Writers and Directors, What happened to them?

All good points so far but it is a well known fact that the majority of movies made by hollywood meet a specific formula. Just like pop stars these days, if you (or the script in this case) don't have that "look" the movie won't be made.

BTW: you all know that there are only 7 basic movie premises/plot lines don't you? This goes for books as well.....and they've all been done to death.

I really don't think there's been a really good ground breaking movie since the original Matrix aired......

I think Spielberg still has the gift, Lucas on the other hand is a joke, a shadow of his former self (though he has put on about 100 pounds)

Saw Munich the other night and must say, it was a very good movie.

To the original poster, I would agree. Most movies today are tripe, made to the lowest common denominator.

Gone are the days of Apocolypse Now, The Godfather, Blade Runner, and Leaving Las Vegas.

In their place we have movies that stem from TV shows, (Dukes of Hazard, Starsky and Hutch, The Brady Bunch), romantic comedies (always starring the late great John Cusack, oh wait, he's not dead, I keep forgetting), and an endless barage of cop movies.

Its the same thing with music .........This copycat , no originality song industry completely sucks .my exception to this would be .live performances from ..the successful bands that do tributes to bands that have passed away or broken up or showing there personal recognitions for someone elses talanted works .......

Yet when i mention any dislikes of music remakes to the younger generation such as under 20
They seem to be just as pleased with the remake as most of us were with the original LOL so maybe this copycat industry really is smart ,money making marketing to target certain age groups and sooooo boringly stale to who have already been on that block ....

I've got a couple of veritable classics that don't fit.

King Kong vs. Godzilla

Alien vs. Predator.

I think the publishing of box office returns has been one of the biggest problems. A movie is now expected to make 100s of millions of dollars to be considered a success.

There are good movies being made you just have to look further than TV and media commercials because only the movies with the big budgets usually get hyped. Keep an eye out for films that are making the rounds at festivals, being shown at rep theatres and rent from places like queen video or suspect video that offer a wider selection than say the big chains like blockbuster and rogers and jumbo.

As the viewers we have to take more chances with our selections and go beyond the movies you'll find at silvercities.

Also, we shouldn't be afraid of renting older movies. There are probably countless movies that you haven't seen yet. Go out and try the hitchcock movies, jimmy stewart, humphrey bogart, james cagney, john wayne, steve mcqueen, redford, newman, brando etc. I think it's safe to say that many of us have not seen all the movies that these actors have been in.

is the correct answer.

The movie and music industry, since all power conglomerated in LA, has been completely subverted by the promotional system. Only new technology will allow other players, namely the artist-creators, to wrestle control back, in little bit by bit.

......
no, there's only two premises/plot lines in all literature and movies:

1. love or the loss of

2. power
