I'd be the first one to defend the WWE. I have been a fan since the 80's but last night's RAW show was pathetic. This was the best they could do?

Eugene vs. Angle - people were booing and Hogan interferring was predictable
Masters vs. Benjamin - terrible, Masters is really bad/no skill
Conway vs. Viscera - these are the best "Mr. Wonderful's" or "Mr. Perfect's" the WWE has? Paul and Curt must be rolling in their graves.
Victoria/Heartthrobs vs. Stacy/Rosey/Hurricane - awful, who cares?
Bishoff/Jericho vs. A REF??? - Cena's interference was predictable, trying to hard to make Jericho a bully he's better than this crap
Diva Search - is this thing still on? Why? Other than the cleavage?
Hardy vs. Snitsky - again Egde interference was predictable, match very boring, are they actually going to do something with Hardy?
Cena's music video - wishy-washy and boring, a ballad? Please.
Hogan/HBK signing - this was like watching paint dry, at times it looked like Hogan didn't know what to say or how to react, Hogan can barely stand without falling over, HBK looked like he was pissed off that he had to actaully do this nonsense, pathetic

The only semi-entertaining thing was the short replay of HBK's Hogan parody on Barry King but it was far too short - instead of Cena's stupid video they should have played the HBK/King interview in it's entirety

In other threads I have defended WWE but I'm with you other guys now. Bring back ECW, NWA, or something else that is interesting. Vince has lost it. Too bad there's not some competition out there worth his effort.

the question is did the WWE ever have it, I mean catering to a bunch of yahoos, especially when they had that so called Arab American and his sidekick who was mouthing off not in Arabic the language of Iraq but PERSIAN!!!

what they couldnt put an ad in a Dearborn paper looking for someone who actually is of Iraqi descent and put them on.

Notice Smackdown doesn't even get a mention in the complaints dept.? It's so bad it's not even on the radar. Watch UFC and TNA on Spike (TNA on Saturday nights in October). TUF2, UFC Unleashed, TNA Impact with the X Division and guys like Chris Sabin, AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe! Plus The Fight Network should be on Rogers in the Fall sometime. Wrestling and MMA options are looking up!

-F out.

Yeah, I've been waiting for that. Any idea whether it's going to be on cable or PPV?

I`m starting to think maybe the WWE is trying to deliberately suck so when Triple-H comes back he can use that as proof of how the company needs him on the show.

As for Smackdown: JBL in the main event again??? What the hell do they see in this guy? The fans hate him. I don`t mean they hate him because he`s a heel and they want to boo him when he comes out. It`s more like they hate him because he`s boring, so when he comes out they want to leave the arena to beat the rush out of the parking lot.

Heaven, definately Heaven
The WWE lost me when they changed their WWF icon to WWE. It should have been what it always was the WWWF. WWE is just so WW-Exit.

I watch old WCW tapes if I want to watch good wrestling. Outsiders, Sting and no Vince Russo (that lowlife).

WWE is just monopolistic garbage. Isn't their stock like the crappiest of crap?

In USD
$12.38 -0.02 / -0.16% 2:06 PM ET
8/10/2005 Open: 12.33 Volume 38,200
High: 12.45 Volume Avg: 93,800
Low: 12.30 P/E Ratio: 22.93
Prev. Close: 12.40 Dividend Yield: 3.88
52-Week Low: 9.91 Market Cap (mil): 262.90
52-Week High: 13.47

Obviously the merging of WCW, WWF and ECW was for this dumb IPO. If a Chinese IPO can do better, the WWE had better do a buyback and close up shop. Nice try Vince Jr. Too big, too much plagerism, too many Dusty Rhodes finishes.

It's pretty sad when the people can predict what is going to happen next. Than again you have the internet to help that. thank god for sat tv, get all japan wrestling and old ECW, and ROH stuff. oh by the way here are the smackdown results for thursday night: your welcome HA hA HA :D

Dark Match.

Deuce Shade d. Paul Burchill. Deuce came out throwing playing cards in the crowd. His gimmick is he is from Las Vegas and was pretty over with the crowd. He won with a sunset flip.

Velocity.

Frankie Kazarian d. Paul London with a roll up. London was pretty over but afterwards he complained about being screwed even though Kazarian won clean. The crowd didn't seem to like London's complaining. Candice was the ring announcer for this one.

Ken "Mister" Anderson d. Funaki with an amazing top rope while Funaki was on his shoulders. Before the match Anderson reintroduced himself and afterwards he got on the mic and declaired himself the winner.

Nunzio d. Jimmy Jacobs. Nunzio won with some help from Big Vito who stood on the outside and watched but would attack Jacobs when the ref wasn't looking.

Hardcore Holly d. Steven Richards (in bWo attire) with an Alabama slam. Torrie was the special ring announcer.

Smackdown.

Booker T d. Joey Mercury. Early on Nitro and Jillian were ejected. Milena tried to get involved but Sharmell stopped her. Booker won with the ax kick.

Peep Show with Batista. Christian asked Batista why the top draft pick doesn't have a match for SummerSlam. Then challenged Batista to a match to prove he deserved to be at the PPV. Batista just told him he would kick his ass.

Animal and Heidenreich d. 2 guys with the doomsday device.

Randy Orton asked Teddy Long who his opponent would be for his big return to the ring. Teddy said since he likes to sneak up behind people his opponent will be a surpise. But it will be a legend who has also fought the Undertaker.

Randy Orton vs. Kamala and Kim Chee. People didn't seem to remember Kamala at first but some people were marking out. Orton gave Kim Chee the RKO when he tried to run in. Orton then hit the RKO on Kamala but before he could pin him the Undertaker RKO/RIP video played. Orton got a little scared when the video played but walked out looking over his shoulder. When the cameras cut off Kamala got a pretty good ovation.

Eddie Guerrero was in the back talking with a children service women. He told her his son was living a lie and he wants him back. He then tells her to come to the ring and observe what happens.

In the ring Eddie calls out Rey and his son. Rey his wife and son came out. Eddie and Rey exchanged words. Rey then said if Eddie takes Dominic he will never fight him again and Eddie will have never beaten Rey. Rey called Eddie a chicken shit and said no matter who Dominic lives with he will always know that Rey is twice the man Eddie is. Rey then challenged Eddie to one final match at Summerslam and the winner gets custody of Dominic. The children service women told Rey and Eddie the problem wasn't with Dominic it was between them and after they put their personal problems aside Dominic will be put in a foster home.

Benoit d. Simon Dean with a crossface.

Super Crazy and Psichosis d. Scotty 2 Hotty and William Regal. Scotty took a beating through most of the match and before he could tag Regal, Regal left laughing at Scotty. Psichosis then hit Scotty with a top rope leg drop for the win.

Batista and Christian ended in a no contest. Before Batista hit the powerbomb JBL ran in and attacked Batista and hit him with a chair several times. JBL cut a promo on Batista as SD ended.

After the show JBL told the ref he wanted a title match right now. JBL and Batista fought for about 5 minutes in a no DQ match. JBL took a chair shot to the head then a Batista bomb. After Batista won he posed for a little bit then did his pose at the entry way again with pyro. Overall a good show and alot better then recent editions of Smackdown.

Oh don't be such a prig. Everyone knows that all pro wrestling is fake -- hence the term "sports entertainment". Pro wrestling has existed for a long time and people dig watching it simply because it is fun to watch.

In the forties and fifties with the popularization of TV, wrestling was a big time feature, routinely outranking boxing (which enjoyed a surge with the "wrestling" style showmanship employed by Clay/Ali) as one of the most popular and widely watched of all televised sports.

Of course it is fake. Everyone knows the script. But we watch it because we like ritual -- it is no different than watching any popular entertainment -- the good guy, although there may be setbacks along the way, always wins in the end. The script is the same in wrestling as it is in any major popular American feature film or television show. We watch because the stories (matches) reinforce the stories we have been told from our youth. David (becausse his heart is true) will defeat Goliath (who is evil and unjust). It is no different than the stories of Rambo, Rocky, Skywalker, Jack Ryan etc, etc...

The brilliance of contemporary wrestling was how the WWF exploded the "heel/babyface" construct that had been a part of all wrestling shows until the early nineties. Up until that time there were clear lines of good guys bad guys. The WWF went against this established morality play which had been a part of all wrestling when they allowed guys like "the rock" (in his first incarnation) and later, most successfully, Steve Austin become the "good guys" even though their personalities were that of braggart and asshole. They were the heroes even thought they didn't play fair. In fact sometimes they were downright dishonest and evil. But they still won -- because, and this is a big becuase, it was OK to cheat to win. Even the good guys did it.

Other forms of entertainment could use being as bold as wrestling has been in their depiction of hero and villian. I would argue that the narrative pro wrestling has written since its rise to prominence in the mid eighties has been incredibly engaging as it is a reflection of the values of North American society. When it began -- the hero was Hogan (his mantra -- mind your manners, eat your cereal). Fast foward fifteen years and the hero is Austin (his mantra -- FUCK YOU [and in small caps "corporate asshole]). I find it fascinating and, at times, a cartoonish but strangly accurate barometer of the moral mood of North America.

Right now (the last year and a half) it's in a bit of doldrums -- has the WWF lost it?, maybe -- as they have yet to devise the next meta twist to make it vital again. Hope they can swing it.
