Recently I have a co-worker going thru a divorce. He's telling me it's getting nasty financially, especially the lawyer bills piling up.

Personally I don't have any friends who have gone thru divorces but was wondering how financially devasted you were by breaking up with the wife.

You can get fucked, especially by the lawyers. Actually you do it to yourself. Its such an emotional situation, and you call your lawyer each time she does something nasty and ca-ching, ca-ching he is charging you for all his time on the phone. Five minutes costs you thirty.
And of course there is all that valuable stuff you have. Fighting over a four year old $30 toaster can cost you as much as ten toasters.

Basically it sucks. Both parties usually get fucked financially. I agree with A 1 Player, totally fucked for two years is a good rule of thumb, but you do come out of it.

Buddy of mine was really fucked for 7 years. Bitch wanted the worth of half his pension NOW, which required him to take a loan for a shit load of money. He got saddled with all the credit card debts and she expected him to continue to pay for her CC. Had to sell the house, she wanted 1/2 the worth of everything she did not take. No more boat, no more BBQ, no more "fun" vehicles.

He had to pay to send her back to university + support + child support. What he found very unfair was that she went to live with Mom and Dad then claimed that she paid fair market rent, which was part of her expenses that she wanted him to pick up.

He ended up first living in a crappy little cramped 2 bedroom basement, then moved into a crappy 3 bedroom apartment in a shitty building that was working class.

What the "parasite" did not take from him, the "blood sucking lawyer" seems to have.

Same story as mine but I had to move back home for a few months. I mean I had NOTHING when it was all said and done.

Have a prenuptial like mine.

What is mine is mine.

What is hers is mine.

Yes, that is the document that saved my butt.

Wee locked

I am keeping my weewee in my pants and not coming out for anyone.

The funny thing is we never hear how old folks over 60 get cleaned by their gf/bf or the lawyers.

I like to read that one.

My separation was very amicable, there was no hatred between us, we just grew apart. The “warden” and I wrote up our own separation agreement, splitting up assets in a fair manner, very little bickering. The only time lawyers got involved was to verify that the agreement was legal and binding. I think the total lawyers fees were in the neighbourhood of $700.

a co-worker of mine (female) is totally getting ass-fucked...
she married a guy with two kids from a previous marriage and did her best to make it work... the lazy fuck decided that since he's married again the kids weren't his responsibility anymore...
4 years later she decides she can't take it anymore...
mr. baby man decides that since he's to lazy to have a real job and she make really good money that he's going to hose her...
she would have been stuck with alimony AND child support (for kids that aren't hers) because she took them to swimming and parent/teacher meetings...
she's cutting a deal and walking away with her clothes in garbage bags, and that's about it...
he gets the house and all investments...
i know everyone is going to jump in and say "finally, a woman getting screwed in a divorce". i'd agree if she wasn't a good friend and a really good person... she really did try to make the family work... but there is only so much an outsider can do with 2 teenagers that aren't hers with no support from the deadbeat father...
poor girl...
at least she is young with a great job and can rebuild...

Oh yeah, I lost everything. EVERYTHING.

But, thank god we never had kids and I am young enough to start over.

It was worth letting her have everything just so I could start anew.

Funny thing is I ran into her on the elevator of my new gf's building last week - while I was with the new gf who is 20 yrs younger and 5x hotter.

All I did was smile warmly and suggest we would catch the next elevator.

I have no respect for any person that does not take responsibility for thier children.
It happens far more often with men than woman, but it does happen

I lost about 70% of my net worth through legal fees and division of assets. (No kids involved so custody issues didn't enter into it.) That was in 2002 and only now am I just getting back to where I was financially.

People must be smarter when it comes to marriage.

A prenuptial agreement puts everything in place so no one gets screwed over and everything is out in the open.

Why should my ex have half of everything that I own?

If there are no children in the picture, then it is quite straightforward.

I don't know how anyone could possibly lose so much money in a divorce with no children involved. I think that the agreements should be altered when children come into the picture. Tthey should not be the ones hurt because you did not get along with your partner.

Regardless, I am number one in my life and I must take care of my own business first. It is not a selfish act, just a smart one. I would always take care of my loved ones if it ever came to that.

In Quebec....it is split down the middle......if there are no kids...50/50
kids sway the balance a bit.....but not much......
If your kids are in school the Government gives you 6 hrs with a meadiator to help.........then it goes to a judge with all assets listed...and split down the middle.....
