One of the big problems they have with Blu-ray is its expense, followed by its market share. "Blu-ray has superior quality, yes," said a spokesperson for porn studio Bangbros, "but HD DVD is easier to produce, cheaper to produce and there are more HD DVD players in homes than there are Blu-ray players, for example in the Xbox 360."

xbox 360 does not come with HD dvd player, PS3 does.

PS3 have sold close to 1 million worldwide and expect to be at 6 million by the summer while xbox360 is expected to be at 12 million. They haven't released how many people have bought the HD dvd player add on for the xbox360.

HD-DVD and Blue Ray problem solved!

Dual Format Devices Announced at CES

Products to Bridge HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Gap

With the high-definition DVD format war dragging on, two companies are unleashing new products designed to bridge the technology gap.

LG is announcing a new dual HDTV player at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week that plays both rival Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats. Warner Bros. Home Video is announcing "Total HD" discs that are encoded with both formats.

The products aim to allay consumer fears about picking a high-def format that might soon be extinct and represent a breakthrough in the industry format gridlock.

Sony`s Blu-Ray format and Toshiba`s HD-DVD have been in a battle for corporate alliances and public opinion to become the new home video standard for the past two years, with their first generation of respective players hitting stores in 2006.

Consumers, studios and consumer electronics retailers have grown frustrated. Consumers are reluctant to invest in a player that might not "win" the format battle. Studios and retailers are concerned the dispute is causing customers not to purchase DVDs, standard-def or high-def, until a winning format is crowned.

The LG player is dubbed the "Super Multi Blue" and will launch this quarter.

"We`ve developed the Super Multi Blue Player to end the confusion caused by the current competition between Blu-Ray Disc and HD-DVD," said Dr. Hee Gook Lee, president and chief technology officer of LG Electronics. "Customers are no longer forced to choose between the two formats. As full HD TV is already gaining ground, we are hoping that the Super Multi Blue Player will play the trigger role in expanding and advancing both full HD TV and high-definition DVD market volume together."

There is a catch. The new player has a suggested retail price of $1,199. For that price, a customer could buy both a Blu-Ray and an HD-DVD player.

Bruce Leichtman, president of Leichtman Research Group, said that a player with that price is unlikely to shepherd a new era of consumer adoption.

"The dual capacity makes a lot of sense, the question comes down to price point," he said. "We`re still at a very early adopter phase."

Still, both projects are cracks in the dam, as companies tire of Sony and Toshiba`s ongoing format battle and look for new ways to circumvent the dispute.

Warner Bros. originally backed HD-DVD before deciding to release content in both formats. Most other studios are continuing to back one format or another

Yeah the price is prohibitive but look at any technology when it first arrived, for eg: 42" plasmas 6 yrs ago: $12,000.00 in EDTV format, this past boxing day they were under a grand.....

At least it's nice to see we won;t have another Beta vs VHS situation happening.

Agree, the price will drop fast once consumers see they have an alternate thrird choice.

HD DVD vs BR

I still think it's too early to say who is winning at this moment, but am thankful that some companies are making dual format players.

dual format player or not you still need to choose the format of the movies you are buying. at the end of the day people spend a lot more on content than they do on the player. and thats a 50% chance that you end up with a bunch of frisbees.

i have blu-ray (because its in the ps3) and at the moment they have most of the movie studios and ces firms, hddvd camp has 2 studios.

vhs won out over betamax(the better technology) because of available content, why would this be any different.

NOTE: just before christmas hd-dvd's copy protection scheme was cracked and the decryption software is already easily available. I doubt the movie studios are very happy about that.

funny it was the porn industry that picked VHS over Beta just when it seemed Hollywood was moving towards Beta... everything mainstream did a 180 and followed the porn route.

Well, that would be obvious.

Back to porn and BR DVD, I heard SONY did not allow the entertainment industries to use the tech for adults content... now, I am taking this with a grain of salt since I haven't read any confirmation articles. But it'd be interesting to know why they would do such a thing which may jump start the format's popularity.

Heaven, definately Heaven
Neither will win.

I think neither will win and will be high-end collectibles in the future and that's it. What will win are DVD-Recorders with massive Gigabyte HDD (Hard-drives) in which one can transfer the material recorded from one or multiple DVDs, or download from the net to transfer to a harddrive, maintaining the high-end quality. Only the HD-TV will win out, but the DVD hardware is going to be lose out. The lower end DVDs will stay, but even that will end up as a non-growth business later on.

Moore's Law is why HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are here vs lower end DVDs, but the high price is inflated by low consumer demand and a market manipulation to believe that a DVD-Recorder with a harddrive doesn't exist or has to be regulated by TiVo, keeping the freedom off the market, whilst in Japan and China HDD-Harddrives are everywhere with massive 1000GB HDDs. Moore's Law will destroy the business of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray before it even gets started. Only corporate greed makes the market look what it isn't.

Gyaos Baltar.

P.S.: General theory of Moore's Law is basically a transistor, HD, etc efficiency and space increases N squared while the price decreases by half. What I just wrote isn't exactly what Moore's Law is, but basically that's what it is.

Sony's Format will Fail

Sony's Formats will allways fail uunless there policies change. ever format sony created Bata ,hi 8 ,digital 8 ,Dat failed because they wanted too much Royalties .
When JVC had VHS when another company wanted to use that format Jvc said sure here are the blue prints for free .Sony said you want Bata you pay us Royalties to use our system and it will cost you.
More politics then quality

I am not sure how important these formats will be in the long term. The future is going to be digital delivery. I am sure at some point we will be able to acquire these movies as downloads either through the net or your TV programming provider.

Who still goes to the video store to rent a movie?

For those who are interested in HD and BR

As quoted from GFY , which quoted from www.audioholics.com

10 Reasons Why High Definition DVD Formats ( BR and HD ) Have Already Failed - By Clint DeBoer

number 10

10. Broadband and IPTV to Compete?
With Verizon, AOL, Time Warner and others jumping to provide HD on-demand services for the consumer it is a very likely event that high definition DVD will be something that isn’t relevant in a service-directed marketplace. Add to this Apple Computer’s recent push for video downloads and we may find that consumers are far more interested in quantity, portability, and ease of use over high quality source material. Even with respect to high definition formats, downloadable files burned to consumer-supplied media may make data high definition DVDs more significant than the retail formats. This consumer model is being readied for testing in South Carolina’s head-end for Time Warner Cable this year.

dumbass, I was quoting the article when the spokemans said the xbox360 came with a HD player. I stated that it does not but PS3 comes with a HD player, implicitly a blueray player.
