I have an old thinkpad 770x, who's win98 I destroyed last year. Now I have installed win98 from cd, but the machine insists that the display is a 600 by 400 display instead of the 1260 by 782. I have installed the1260 by 782 driver, but every time I boot, it reinstalls the 600 by 400 driver. The display looks awful.

Is there any way I can tell the system that the display is 1260 by 782??

PS: I tried to install Ubuntu, but Ithe CDROM reader cannot boot from the
Ubuntu disk. I can boot an old version of Knoppix, and there the display looks great.

A laptop with win98 with a native resolution in excess of 1024x768? How odd.
I am the one that is odd. Sorry. The display is 1024X768. Seems to be a SXGA device.

Newest: it actually seems to be a 1280X1024 SXGA display

If your copy of linux looked great why not format again, then try a clean install of Ubuntu.
If anything it should run better than Win98 which may be conflicting with Ubuntu.

ISOLinux and Debian says that it cannot boot from Knoppix 5 or Ubuntu 7.10 or Ubuntu 6, when I try.

How do I get around that?

The old version 3 of Knoppix works great, as far as the screen goes, but
cannot find neither the wireless USB adapter or the cardbus adapter.

I have tried almost everything to get win98 to recognize the 1280X1024 screen,
to no avail.

I didn't have those problems at all.
I just burned an ISO bootable CD of linux then ran it off the CD with XP till I installed in on a separate partition.
Not sure what your problem may be.
