I have a car and there is no heat.. the needle says it's over heating but theres no smoke.. does anyone know what could be wrong?

If the oil is okay, check the coolant leval in the radiator if you refill it and it keeps dropping then you have a pin hole leak in the radiator. You will have to recore the radiator.
Hopefully you have not fried the piston rings but stop driving the car. As you mentioned the temp needle says the car overheating and you are going to fry the piston rings. Can anyone say engine overhaul ?
It has been cold in january did you put some cardboard to partialy block the radiator so as to get some heat to warm the car ? If so in warmer weather you have to remove it otherwise the thermostat will stick and the car overheats.
If not any of the above it sounds like the thermostat got stuck in the closed position not allowing coolant to flow and raising the engine temperture.

Thanks everyone! I just took it to the shop and they said that it was low on coolant... I'm not sure if they checked the oil or not but they did check for leaks so i'm hoping that would mean they checked the oil too..

I agree that this is the most likely thing. They are supposed to fail open and not cause this but I've had 2 go in my life and both failed shut. It may also just be low on coolant but a low coolant warning light should be going as well.Goober Mcfly said:Thermostat's farked.
Don't drive it around like this. If it seriously over heats you can do a lot of damage to the engine.
