Hey guys invested in a stereo and found myself with two turntables (technics 1200). Given my love for hip hop I've decided to looking into getting a mixer (Rane TTM 56). But right now I have audiophile styli (Denon DL103) which are not meant for scratching......

so that brings me to the question what stylus would you recommend for spinning/scratching?

Head over to Steve's Music on Queen West. They can help you with that.

Good luck DJ FRANK!

Thanks Mark..... who knows maybe the next terb party will be courtesy of yours truly.

I actually found the person at Moog Audio on Queen West to be useful but at the time I only asked about mixers.

Awwwwwww yeah it's Frank Castle on the wheels of steel dropping the ones and twos.

Yeah I know I have the protractor and scale for mounting the stylus and then setting it to the new weight. It's pretty cool I got a crash course in changing a stylus into a new head shell.

Shure M44-7, if it is still available. You may also be able to get an M55 stylus and back off on the tracking force if you want to use it for 'audiophile' listening.

http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/DJPhonoCartridgesAndNeedles/index.htm

Try ebay, they may have this cartridge for a good price.

Here is an example

This is just one of many that are out there, by the reputable makers, Shure, Ortofon, Audio Technica, etc.

Papi;

Thanks for pointing Stanton out! Funny thing, I have a 680EL with two needles, and it sounds great. The only problem is that it is too heavy, in its P-Mount version, for any of my turntables. A good strategy would be, get a 681EEE body, if the turntable accepts the body (standard 1/2 inch mount) and put in a 680EL stylus in it.

Shure's are the best if you plan to scratch. In terms of a mixer I would suggest a Pioneer DJM 600 or anything Allen & Heath. :)
On the audiophile side, it was a very sad day when they discontinued the V15VxMR. You couldn't beat the V15 series for sound neutrality and fidelity. Luckily, I have an M97Xe and a lot of VSTIII styli to keep me going until I check out of this place.

The M447 DJ cartridge and stylus set is still available, or try the M44G DJ set. You might also look at using an Shure N44G stylus with the M44G cartridge.
Strongbeau;

Thank you. I stand corrected. The M55 and its replacement styli were discontinued. The M44G is for very light tracking force, as was the M55E.

Another variation on the theme is the M44-7-H, premounted onto a Technics headshell, and the White Label DJ cartridge and headshell combo.

Thanks for the info guys.....

just a few points.... the ortofon website SUCKS..... they give all the technical info in their various styli but don't give it in layman's terms so it all means nothing to me.

The Shure's M44-7 look to be the winners but I think I will have to ask around a bit more before I'm completely satisfied.

I have to admit the ortofon's with the light on the end is a cool idea.

Finally, after watching Taladega Nights I can't help but snicker whenever I see Shakenbake's handle..... don't worry though not laughing at you and I know you've had the handle long before the movie.

And yes Vive le vinyl
