Hobbying in China

Hello from Beijing China.

Last night (first night here) I was wondering how (if) people hobby over here. Tonight I found out. If you’re a single guy and you’re walking around, a pretty lady will approach you. She’ll speak Chinese (Mandarin) at first but if you say a few word in English she’ll switch languages. I've heard the pitch 4 times so far. Generally it goes as follows (notice escalation of services offered):

Lady – You want pretty girl? Massage in your room? Lots of girls to choose from. You get massage in your room!
Xarir – No thanks. (Walks along.)
Lady – (Follows and gets closer to you. Touches arm.) Lots of girls to chose from! You have massage in your room. You have sexy massage.
Xarir – No thank you. (Keeps walking.)
Lady – You have sexy massage in your room. You have sex! Lots of pretty girls to chose from. You can see them over here. (points)

At this point I’m curious but I know that tonight I’m not going to follow through – still too tired from the jetlag.

Xarir – How much?
Lady – Only 600 Yuan. (6.8 Yuan = $1 Cdn)
Xarir – No, sorry. Too much!
Lady – Not too much! Only 600 Yuan. Chinese money! Not big money!
Xarir – No, too much. Thank you!
Lady – Small money! Small money!
Xarir – Thank you. (Keeps walking.)
Lady – (Keeps following. Tugs gently but insistently on arm.) Small money! How about 500 Yuan?
Xarir – No thanks.

Etc

Eventually she offered 400 Yuan and I would have been able to pick from several young ladies, all of them quite pretty.

So I guess that’s how the initial transaction goes. If I do TOFFT later on I’ll let you know!

I'm in downtown - about 2km from Tiananmen.

As for watching my cornhole - don't worry. I actually wasn't looking to hobby, I was just curious about it. I probably won't have the opportunity to take the actual plunge. The cynical part of me would be worried anyway that once the lady makes up to the room, the Chinese version of Guido would suddenly appear and make life a little too interesting.

Hobbying in China is very underground. There are no forums, or boards that people prescribe too in order to better the industry, so to speak. On the other hand, it is a HUGE industry over there. To be on the safe side, go to Kaoroke Lounges. These places are like hotels in Asia. You rent a private room equipped with sofas, tables, entertainment systems, depending on the class of the place. You can ask the waiter or management to have some company while you drink and sing. The "mommy" will come in and ask for what you want. She will then proceed to parade a whole line up of girls for you you to pick and choose from. When you decide on the one that you like, she will offer her to sit with you and serve you during the time you are there. You will be charged a sitting fee. Tip is usually good for the girl and the "mommy". At this point, it is up to you to ask the girl if she is willing to leave with you. Some are, some aren't. If she is not, let the "mommy" know and she will accomodate accordingly. This happens everyday and mainly for business. Asian vendors treating their Western buyers to a night in the town. Many of these places are right there in the hotel. Other, more larger establishments, have their own buildings, some even looking like hotels. This is VERY common in the southern part of China, Shanghai, Zhou Hai, Shenzen, Hong Kong, Taiwan, but a little less popoular in the north. Being that it is closer to the central government. All the more reason that it is more discreet and much more underground, but definately happens. Anyways, this is common practice for chinese business, and is very widespread all throughout Asia.'

This of course is a little more pricey, but hey you are tourist and that is just how it is. To have the same fun and expenses that the locals do is just impossible. They either do not trust you, or don't want any foreigners around. In the south of China, there are places, towns, cities, resorts dedicated to hobbying.

There is one famous place which a 2hr boat ride from Hong Kong called Shekou. Once you arrive at the peir, there is a large hotel/resort right at the port. This is mainly for tourists and foreigners. Along the side of this hotel is a strip of bars and clubs about a mile long. Every single bar is for this hobby. Most of the clients are business men or nomadic hobbyist. The bars line the streets with girls sitting outside grabbing clients off the street. Not regulated at all. I am not sure of the actual laws, but I mean it is wide out in the open. Most of these girls will go back to the hotel with you. And don't worry about doing this alone, because you will meet TONS and TONS of johns just like you doing exactly what you are doing. I mean how hard is it to spot a white guy in a crowd of asians right. Anyway, that is my experience with this hobby in China. I go for business about 7 times a year and it has become quite the industry over there. Just think about the population in North America and the amount of people that are SP's. Now compare that to 1.2 Billion and counting...you do the math!! Good luck...and for sure watch out for your cornhole.

Hobbying is not too tough in China. If you are in a nice hotel just hang out in your hotel lounge in the evening and look for the well dressed ladies sitting alone. Also to meet ladies outside of hobbying check out Lotus Lane near Hou Hai lake. Very nice upscale hangout spot, not really a meat market but possible to meet some nice ladies there.
