Currently re-designing basement and want to install surround sound system. Require speakers and reciever and am fed up with in store $ 8.00 an hour guy who is of no help. The area for movies and games is approx. 25' x 15' this system will also be used for music when entertaining. Just gave away my tower speakers and want small speakers with big sound I have looked at Bose system 5 speakers and sub for $ 1799.00 and Sony reciever $ 799.00 any help with questions to ask, system or where to go is appreciatted. This system should blow people away when listening to music and especially when watching movies. Thanks for your help.

you should go to BAY BLOOR RADIO, i know there commercials make them sound like the lamest place on earth, but IMHO they are one of the best places to go when you're looking for new A/V stuff. and the staff is way more low presure/informed/helpful than sh*t holes like future shop.

I see that you are shopping at Future Shop or Best Buy (Both the same store) . It all depends on how deep your wallet is and what you are willing to spend to get good quality of sound and your taste in Home Audio.

I would recommend Canadain Sound in Brampton. This is very high end store. The sales guy are really good and they know what they are talking about. T-Dot recommended a good store too.

Hope this helps

First I will say, Bose sucks. Bad drivers, bad sound, excellent marketing. It is really not a good use of your money. I also think Sony is not the Sony of old... their build quality used to be beyond reproach... now only in selected lines.

If you want to blow people away on movies, put the money into subwoofers and the picture (front projector... you are in a basement you can manage the light). Those two factors really put the oomph in.

For speakers, you are lucky to be in Canada. Companies like Paradigm, PSB, and Axiom make an excellent, well priced product.

Good luck.

friends don't let friends buy Bose

an excellent forum for all your home theater questions at:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/index.php

check out the home theater basics first and then move on to receivers and speakers.

I looked long and hard and ended up with a great system for my needs for about 1/2 of what I was planning on spending thanks to this forum. For a room that size, I'd imagine you could get a killer system for easily under a $1000. You can always upgrade components later and sell the used stuff on ebay.

Kromer's great - I would also recommend you check out some of the Onkyo home theatre systems... Look at the Onkyo HT-S767c.
Great sound and value and is perfect for an area of your size.

Your room is relatively small so don't get yourself talked into buying stuff you don't need such as a 7.1 surround system. You should also set yourself a budget and keep to it. Audio, particularly in the high end can get breathtakingly expensive for relatively small improvements in sound.

If you have the money, do spend it on a proper amplifier. One of the most impressive gains you'll get is from a good amp. A proper 5.1 surround system should have 5 discreet amplifiers - one for each speaker. (The sub is powered by its own amp.) Most consumer grade stuff (Sony, Bose etc) does provide 5 channels of amplification but driven from one power supply. So when things get loud the amp (the surround processor actually) tends to ensure that most of the sound is driven to the front speakers and specifically to the centre channel. This has the effect of reducing the volume coming from the surrounds which gives your system an unbalanced & / or muted (muffled) sound. A proper high-end amplifier will drive 5 channels of amplification using 5 individual power supplies.

Amplifiers that can do this include the Bryston 9B. There are other solutions out there too. Personally I use 2 amps - a Proceed Amp3 and a Proceed HPA2. (Neither are currently in production anymore as Proceed has now been folded into the Mark Levinson brand.)

Take a drive to Buffalo and head over to the SPEAKER SHOP

they sell PRO-QUALITY systems for home quality prices, The trick is in the design (placement of speakers) You can have a 25,000 dollar system and if it is in wrong it sounds like crap. Also remeber RMS or WATTS the receivers are rated in is not PEAK POWER or how the speakers are rated. So if you decide to go component level you need to match correctly as not to blow out speakers.

Don't get fooled into thinking "special wire" is best. The only true inprovment in conectivty is the Fiber Optic connection. The rest may improve the curve on an OCILLOSCOPE but not to the ears.
