Of course if the lease is for longer than the time period you are legally allowed to be in the country it may in the future be used as evidence of intent to remain.

I want to know if it's easy for a non-resident to rent an apartment for long term.
What are the requirements (paperwork) needed?
Does people accept cash in hand and no contract or can you only rent with a leasing contract?
Do you need to have prove of work, bankaccount etc etc.?

Jessie
This will work more easily with a small landlord than a large corporation.
I know many people who will rent to you month to month as long as you want, no need for proof of employment, banking or a lease.

There is no government regulation that applies here: If your landlord will take your money, you're good!

Most landlords want a credit check for their own protection, and that's where you will run into trouble--but that's between you and your prospective landlord.

And where could I find these people? Where to look for?
As I believe you already know, it is down scale locations which typically are available for lease from month to month. Very few upscale properties do not want yearly leases.

The exception to this are residence hotels which typically cater to contract workers etc. . . who are temporarily in a city for several weeks or several months.

The first place I rented was an apartment-hotel from the Globe classifieds. No lease, no hassles, cash in advance, pay a bit above the standard apartment rate.

My first real landlord made me fill out an application, but I don't think he checked it out.

As for my latest landlord, it's probably easier to get a security clearance than to rent from him!

Like the others said, la migra and the cops aren't going to bust you when you move into a place. As far as I know, they don't get tenant details from the landlord, and you don't need to register when you move in someplace. Usually, they're going to ask for a 12-month lease.

Just a thought, but a sublet might involve less paperwork. On the downside, you'd be dealing with a human being, and not a big faceless corporation.

You mean residence hotels like short stay lettings?
By the way Aardvark, are you Dutch? Aardvark is a Dutch name for a sort of pig that likes to eat from the ground.

Yes I was looking on Kijiji before and saw a few private owners
Think Craigslist is down though.
Ok thanks,
XXX

If you dedicate hours of search & calling in the housing sections of Craigslist & Kijiji you will be successful in finding a place.

There are many private owners renting condos, apartments & houses who will jump when an envelope of cash (first & last) is presented to them:eyebrows:
