high cholesterol? i am only 24 but my doc told me to eat more fruits, less alcohol and more excercise. I honestly feel ashamed as this is an old mans condition. The big problem to me is i already eat a lot of fruits but eat a lot of fatty foods at the same time.

I always thaught this was only for old guys. I had 2 tests done and this was the same conclusion.

seriously when I first came to this country I was surprised and sickened by how much meat people eat here. I am not an advocate of vegeterianism, as I am not one myself. But I probably eat no more than 2 - 3 servings of meat in a week, but eat lots of vegetables. - fruits too, but fruits can't replace vegetables - brocolli, carrots, asperagus, cawliflower. i find it weird that people don't like eating vegetables. it sickens me most restaurants don't serve enough vegetables and too much meat.

For example, i love meatball pasta, but i only want like 2 - 3 meatballs in it and with lots zuchini and asperagus on the side. but almost no restaurant will serve that. usually the side vege is as little as one spoon and the rest is filled with a dozen meatballs.

Had that condition for years. Finally started to eat much healthier last year and the results were incredible, and not just for the cholesterol.
Listen to your doc. If you have doubts, get a second opinion.
If you're not much of a foodie when it comes to understanding what contains what and what's good vs what's bad, etc, book an appointment with a nutritionist. They can be very helpful.
The bottom line is that changing your eating habits does require a bit of work at the beginning, but it gets much easier as you get used to it and the newer healthier ways become habit.
I wish I had made the necessary changes when I was your age.

I have a feeling they'd be more than happy to double your veggies and halve the meat if you asked them to.

I'd say hit the gym, and hit it hard. Diet and exercise to get rid of any extra weight you carry. If you can cut down on excess fat in your body you can potentially put a huge dent in your cholesterol without too many other lifestyle changes. All by itself that might solve the problem, depending on your current physique.

Second, is this a one time test? My wife had a cholesterol reading come in sky high. She went back a few months later and her cholesterol was normal--she concluded that she miscalculated and probably didn't fully follow the "don't eat within X hours" advice before her last test. Failing to follow that advice can REALLY skew your results--so if this is ONE test, get it done again in a few weeks, and be sure and fast properly before going in for the blood test.

Next go after the "high value" items in your diet, switch from fries to salad with your meals, avoid fast food. See if you can cut down on the fat without cutting down too much on the enjoyment. When I go on a diet I make myself feel better about cutting out all the burgers and fries by eating more expensive food--I go out more for expensive meals, where I feel pretty good eating the smarter choices, because they're so damn good.

If I were you, my goal would be to preserve as much of my lifestyle as possible. In my case, I would be loathe to give up alcohol. In order to control my weight I've generally stopped drinking beer in favour of lower calorie alcoholic drinks--a vodka martini packs a hell of a lot fewer calories for the alcoholic punch it carries, versus beer.

In any case do not under-estimate how much of a difference exercise can make in your life. The govt. recommends 30min three times a week, but that should be considered a MINIMUM. You'll hit your optimal level of health if you can get 180min of exercise a week instead of only 90. Try and build it into your life and make it something fun--maybe hit the gym for some of it, and for the rest do something you enjoy like squash or cycling or some other sport.

Eat a Mediterranean diet. Start now and be ruthless about it. If you eat like a North American 24 year old, you will have all the pains of old age as you grow older, earlier and more severe than you should. Fruit, veg, nuts, oils, other legumes. Drink wine instead of beer. You are so young - you can have a great life if you get away from the brown foods and the processed foods, now. And, exercise.

You'd be surprised how many times I get puzzled looks from annoyed waitress like I am trying to make their life more difficult! Most of the time, they tell me it's going to cost extra! yeah so eating healthy is more expensive, even though it should be cheaper.

I would deal with it by eating healthier, drinking less and working out more.

If the fatty foods you eat are fast foods like Kentucky fried chicken and burgers
you have as much to worry about excessive intake of sodium as cholesterol.
Also beware of high sodium content in processed foods. Even the so called
"Heart Healthy" soups from Campbell's are way too high in sodium for your
heart.

Don't worry too much about eating meat on a daily basis. Biologically
human beings did not evolve as herbivores. The problem with meat is that
people who are over fond of it often miss the more important nutrients. High
sodium fast foods are generally deficient in potassium for instance. It is alright
to treat yourself to a juicy steak or pork roast but only in moderation.

You need to take control, tell your doctor that cholesterol is for old guys and you're a young man.
