How credit worthy are you? What is the total amount of credit you have, and how much is the maximum limit for one card that you have?

My max is 20 k for a GM Visa.

I have one Bank of America Card that has a $40,000 limit. They keep raising it in increments of $10,000 dollars and I keep calling them to lower it. I don't like having that much an any card.

I have one Visa Card that has a $95,000 limit... If I wasn't so responsible I could get in serious trouble with that. :p

Amex Gold - they tell me there is no pre-authorized spending limit. I tried to put a Accord DX on it (USD 16k) but the damn dealership would only accept 3k on a credit card...bastards, could have got made out on the membership points. :(

What you do is when you are making the deal with the salesman and he needs to get the managers "approval" and comes back at a higher price, you counter with what you are willing to pay but in the bax where it says " Cash or certified Cheque Only" you write in or " Credit Card". Make sure all parties inital that change to the standard wording. If they want the deal they will take it.

I did that once years ago and when I came to pick up the car they asked for the cert cheque I plunked down the credit card, they said no way we don't want to pay the fee and besides it is " Cash or cert cheque only" ( with a smile , ok grin) I told them my signed contract was for credit card and if they didn't take it I was getting the names ofother people in the showroom as witnesses and my lawyer would contact them the next day for particulars. The business managers smile ( grin) faded.

They hated me but took the credit card, Never went to that dealer for service and oddly enough never got another car there.

Citibank just raised me to $100,000 on my platinum Mastercard - they must think I'm actually a doctor:D

I have one credit card with a $25,000 limit, from some years ago when I travelled in Africa for 4-6 weeks at a time. I never bothered to increase the limit, but found out I needed it when I went to the US for a medical test and was scheduled for surgery the next day. I came within $500 of the limit.

When I came back, I immidiately got the limit increased.

To my surprise, my RBC Visa (Platinum) is at $25K which is where it's been for at least 5 years now. Guess I don't charge enough to make it worthwhile raising the limit. The work card (AMEX) is theoretically unlimited. I've actually charged up to $70K on that card in one month so I know for a fact that if there is a limit, it's pretty high.

On a related note, how many of you don't pay the full amount every month? I always pay mine off so the banks never make any money off me.

I bought a boat worth $65K on mine years ago. The merchant took the card for the $3K deposit, but refused to take the rest. The merchants agreement with AMEX (or any other card) doesn't allow them to refuse it. When I threatened to call AMEX, he offered a small discount, but I wanted the points (just under 100,000 points which at the time was 3 or 4 round trip flights to Vancouver) and the 30 days.

He ended up accepting it but wasn't happy. I had called AMEX ahead of time to make sure they would authorise it. All they asked was how I was going to pay it and I told them that I was going to pay it the same way I had every month for the previous 15 years... on time and in full. They just said fine...normally put $3-5K on per month, so it was a bit of a change :p

Always. If I'm tight that month (or just bought a boat!) I pay them off with a LOC which is really low interest... Credit card rates are ridiculous. I'm surprised they haven't been regulated.

So, the poor bastard who sold you the boat had to pay, what 2% of the 65,000 to Amex? That's $1300. LOL. No wonder he wasn't too happy.

I have reported every asshat to the appropriate agency that attempt to extort a different rate from me than what was on the price tag. If you take VISA, MC or AMEX, you take them. The merchant does get benefits from not having that cash on hand - it is a cost of doing business. Do not ever attempt to pass that on to me, or we will never do business again. That is a promise! One person alone cannot shut down a business, but if everyone treated these pricks the same way, they would realize the error of their ways.

In my case, I was just happy that i was getting a great deal on the car..i didn't pursue it further.

Hmm..so i could have complained to the card company, huh?
