I just got a new car with an mp3 compatible stereo system. Do you just click and copy mp3 onto a CD and burn it? thanks

What software are you using? Nero? If the Car radio supports raw MP3 Format you should just do a Data transfer to the cd rom. Some software will turn it into audio cd format automatically .Older unites needed the folders to be put in a certain order to play or access the files faster

Just burn the mp3s as data.
When I was saving my mp3s to cd all I did was load ~700megs of mp3s from a music mp3 folder onto the playlist and burn it as data.
You should be able to do this with any software out today.
CDs burned this way had ~150-260 songs/CD, on them depending on the bitrate and song lengths involved.

If you don't want songs to play alphabetically, you can number each song in your playlist.
i.e.,
01, song x
02, song y
03, song z, etc...
as they do in newsgroups. This way the songs will be played in the order you select by number.

Or you can probably select the random playback feature that is in most car stereos

You can just use iTunes. Make playlists, burn to CD. You can also skip the whole CD issue by getting an iPod and plug in car dock that will play through your car stereo. Some new cards have a direct plug-in for iPod probably will become a standard feature. You can also get a plug for to play your music on your iPod through your home stereo system for $15 - $20 anywhere.

I realize that this may sound like a shill for Mac products but it's just the best way to go.

Thanks, but re-numbering is a pain in the a$$, especially with 150-200 songs on one disk. Random is fine but I prefer more control over the mix and tempo changes. MP3 player hook up would be ok, but I'd lose the use of my steering wheel controls for my radio. I'll take a look at iTUnes for making playlists.

For one thing, the direct access accessory for ipods to connect directly to a car stereo aren't cheap. They average around $100.00 for the docking station plus another 80 bucks or so for the connector. I think you're talking about a phono plug that will connect the headphone jack out from the ipod to the aux input of your car stereo. This will work with ALL mp3 players, not just ipods. I use this setup for my Iriver. Same goes for using it with your home stereo but you might need a Y connector to hook it up to the RCA jacks in the back.

As for not wanting your discs to play randomly in your car, as stated, just de-select random play on the car deck.

It also could be caused by how the files are named. In some cases when you have downloaded music from the net, the songs are named in all sorts of manner. for eg: The Tubes - Talk to you Later or the_tubes_talk_to_you_later or the Tubes - Talk to you Later. This will seriously mess up your playlist. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent correcting spelling errors and mistakes in the file names. SOme players are also dependant on the file tag and if it isn't present, this messes up the playlist too.

Writeable CDs are less than 50 cents anywhere. Buy them on a spool of 50.

The iPod holder for your car can cost $40 to $50 for a decent one at Wal-Mart. Canadian Tire had them for $10. as a christmas special last year, bought 5 for my family all are still working. A plug to play your iPod through your stereo is about $15 to $20 at Radio Shack/Source.

With iTunes you can make up playlists, rearrange them any way you want. Re-writeable CDs are available but at the cost of a spool they're more trouble than they're worth.

I am not a shill for mac, just a serious music collector who researched and found that this was what worked best for me.

HW: could you include a link to the ipod dock that you bought for $50.00??

If it is in fact a vehicle docking station then that's the deal of the year because everyone else is selling them for $100.00 plus 80.00 for the specific cable for your car/stereo.....

If it's the fm modulator type then you're losing sound quality. It is much better to connect it through the aux in.

However, as the original poster asked, it is FAR cheaper to just burn MP3's to a cd and play them that way. Unless of course you already have a portable mp3 player then if his car has an aux in, then he only needs a m/m 1/8" phono plug which will only cost about 5 bucks....

My advice is don't buy into the ipod craze...IMO they aren't worth the hype and you can get another brand, with more capacity, for about half the price.....
