I keep getting spam from Hype Multimedia. A long, long time ago I signed up on their site but they've since morphed into different entities but I keep getting 4-7 emails a week promoting shitty clubs in Toronto.

I've marked them as spam in Hotmail and ticked the "notify Hotmail" box but they just keep coming. If they appeared in my junk mailbox it would be okay, but they keep showing up in my inbox.

I've done the auto remove thing on their website but it didn't stop 'em.

How can I get rid of these bloody things?!?

You may not be able to.

Spamsters can get pretty sophisticated, coming up with all kind of randomized addresses. As well as coming up with ways of disguising words that filters are looking for (i.e. "V - i - a - g - a - r - a" instead of Viagara).

You can keep changing your filters at the risk of accidentally excluding legitimate e-mail. But you are restricted to whatever filters Hotmail uses, and even then, the filtering software is fighting a losing battle against the spammers.

IMHO, the bottom line is that similar to physical junk mail, spam is a fact of life.

You train the program. Blacklist a spammer and every time he shows up the message is in red. You don't even have to read it. The message stays on the mail server and does not come into your computer. When you hit the "Process Mail Button" back it goes to the sender or is automatically deleted. Your choice.

Good Luck...

The best thing I can advise is, don't use hotmail. Or Gmail. Or... anyone elses if you can avoid it.

Domains are dirt cheap these days. I have one with hostpapa, never need to pay for the domain name again and it costs me under $100 a year. For that I get my own post office, and only publicise one email address. My private email address is never published, and if I'm signing up for something I use an email address I can create on the fly for it, because I own the "post office" belonging to the domain.

So I don't tend to get on spam lists because the temporary addresses I use when signing up to things can disappear on command. I also get to control my own antispam filters, and maintain my own white and blacklists.

Much easier.

..If you want, you can also make hotmail very strict by only allowing users in your "safe" list to email you...
You can also crank up the Hotmail junk mode settings from default:

  1. Log into Hotmail
  2. Go to Options
  3. Under Junk e-mail, select "Enhanced"
