HTML File syntax?

I tried googling the above phrase but did not get the hits I wanted.

I know there is some way to store a hyperlink for files. It is something like "file://somefile.doc" and I want to store it as a bookmark. I know I could do this with a desktop shortcut but that is not what I am trying to achieve. I need something that is independent of what user is logged onto the computer i.e. not on the desktop.

If it works, the user clicks the bookmark in a browser and it opens the file in the default application. In the above example, it opens the file in Word but it could be Excel or something else.

Also, I need to know how precisely to express the folder. For example, should I expand the above to file://c:\data\word\somedoc.doc? I guess the direction of the slashes matter.

I suppose someone can give me the fish here but if there is a good link to how I can figure this out myself (including examples) I would appreciate that.

If it matters, I am creating a poor mans intranet here. I am setting bookmarks in Yahoo that will point to about a dozen files. These files are data or procedures. I will create a standard folder like c:\data\word and dump the files in there as I see fit. I want the users to access them from the browser rather than My Computer or Explorer or any other tool. I will update the bookmarks remotely as I see fit. Part of this is just for my education and I know there are other ways to skin this cat. For reasons that don't matter much, "save as HTML" is not a route I want to take.

Thanks in advance fellow terbites. This forum is better than the tech ones.

Well, so it does. I guess in my earlier attempts I did not spell out the full path or had the slashes reversed.

Also, sometimes there might be spaces in the filename. Do I need to bracket or somehow enclose it?

I am amazed that you knew the filename! I hope I did not spill the other filenames.

Cindy thanks you and so do I.
