If you've ever been to India and the sub-continent in general and had to do business there, this won't come as a surprise. It's utter chaos trying to get something done in that environment. Total. Chaos.

Is this a proof that dictatorship works better than democracy. India and China is essentially the same story but China hosted the Olympics and World Fair with flying color and you don't hear car bombs every week.

Good point. I know that Singapore, which is basically a benevolent dictatorship, is a model city state. No freedom of the press and laws against menial things like spitting on the sidewalk, chewing gum, and death penalty for drug offences. Still, for them it seems to work. If you've been you'll know what I mean. If you haven't been, you should go.

I was in Delhi in March on business and I am no construction expert but based on what I saw in the city I came back and told a number of people that the Indians would not have all the facilities completed by the first week in October for the start of the games. They should have awarded the Commonwealth Games to Hamilton who actually came second.I am sorry this is happening but I am not surprised..

If the games actually get cancelled because of corruption in construction, wow:

Again,I was recently in Singapore and there is no comparison with Delhi or India for that matter.Singapore would have pulled it off.In fact in August they held "The Under 18 Games" and I understand it went off without a hitch with all facilities being ready.Probably not quite the size of the Commonwealth games but nevertheless it was done efficiently which is not the case in India.
If you have ever tried to business or stay in india you will know what I am talking about. There is no comparison for cleanliness and efficiency between Singapore and India.

A similar issue occurred for the Olympics that were going to be held in Athens. The IOC was not confident in the government delivering the required facilities. Quiet back channel comments were made about moving the Olympics to Sydney, who held them 4 years previous. The Greeks got the message and Athens was ready.

In the case of India, it is almost the end of September. Someone at the Commonwealth Games was not holding a sufficiently tough line with India. The issue of having the facilities ready should not be up for debate at this point.

If the games are cancelled, postponed or moved, it will be a significant blow to India's credibility. No nice way around it.

There is so much red tape to deal with in India that this is no surprise. In India, anything run my the government = failure. Anything run by private corporation = success

It's even worse than earlier reported. Despite the Indian assertion that these things are minor glitches, there are some serious and major problems. No way that these facilities are going to be ready for the opening of the Games. No chance.

Have a look through the BBC slide show. Un-farking-believable.

I believe it is apparent that the games will either need to be postponed or cancelled. I'm about as certain as is possible that there is no way that this can be made right in two weeks. Canada, Scotland and New Zealand have already postponed their teams arrivals.

Further there is now an outbreak of dengue fever (breakbone fever) due to all the puddles of water around the complex, and part of the ceiling of the weightlifting arena fell in yesterday.

Wow - how could "new" construction possibly look like that?

It this medieval times?????The country is so ripe with corruption, they've sold themselves down the river!!

and above all Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit rejected talk of abandoning the Games, dismissing the incidents as 'minor glitches'.

It's very sad, and apparently it's likely to get worse.

BBC News reports that Delhi was given seven years to prepare for the games but almost nothing was done until 2008. Reminds me of some bosses I've worked for: Stuff lays on their desk untouched for ages, then suddenly it becomes super-urgent.

Apparently it's also the most expensive Commonwealth Games ever.

Honest question here: How was it decided that Delhi was to hose these Games?

But these m.fuckers are even taking business away from the Chinese. I have a connection with a chinese manufacturer, and I just lost a deal to an Indian manufacturere, they had one third of production cost as the Chinese one...
