I found a dish

I was driving through my neighborhood today, when I came across a Bell Expressvu dish that someone had removed from their house and left by the sidewalk.

I threw it in the back of the van and brought it home. It is in excellent condition and has the cable attached.

I live in the heart of Toronto and do not subscribe to any cable or satellite service.

So, as I am sure you have already guessed, my question is:

Do I have to subscribe to the Bell service for this to be of any use to me or is there some kind of inexpensive “generic box” I can get to activate it? OR
Is it just a piece of junk that I should put back out on the street?

P.S If this is a really dumb question, the please just forgive my ignorance and save your derision for some of the more egregious lapses of good taste that frequently appear on this board.;)

Thanks

There was a reason it was on the street.

Are you implying that it is broken?

I just figured that they had "unsubscribed" from Bell and didn't want the dish attached to their house anymore.

You know how tardy these service providers can often be when it comes to picking up their cancelled equipment.

I wouldn't say its garbage. its not worth much , but you can still use it if you buy a FTA recevier.

Hi Tee,

Where would I find a freelancer?

How would I check if the dish is working?

I thought the Bell dish and receiver had to be given back to Bell when you unsubscribe from their service, no?

Yea there is areason on the street, your best is probably to return it to bell, and complain how it didn't work and you want your money back.

they might not even look up your account becuase you have a giant dish in your hand. it will help if you have a bell service other then the expressvu to back up getting your money back.

If you really want to use the second hand dish you found chances are you will have to call bell and let them you got a dish and you nee dit hooked up with a box.

They never asked for mine back ............ so I'd say no. All they were worried about was charging me for another month because I called them 1 day after their imaginary "cotoff" date to stop the service.

It's really not so odd to find a dish by the curb ..... most dish providers have a deal where if you move you leave the old dish where it is and they'll come put up a new one for you at your new place. Most likely in this case the new owner didn't want it sticking on his house and tore it down and put it at the curb for Johnny. It probably works fine.

The idea (I think) is that they hope the new owner will see he has a dish and call Bell to sign up if he isn't already a customer. If he is a customer he doesn't have to call Bell for a new dish. Either that or they want a dish on every house cuz they think it looks cool

Yes, the dish can be used with a Free To Air (FTA) receiver to receive Bell Expressvu (BEV) assuming it works and all the parts (i.e. LBN) are there. Be aware: this is ILLEGAL in Canada. The legality of using FTA to receive the US based Dish Network is grey and there are many satellites that you can receive legally, mostly foreign language news and sports. Many FTA people refer to the hobby as "testing".

Thanks data, you anticipated my next question, that`s exactly what I needed to know.

In your opinion, which would be the best reciever to get or do they all provide similar results?

Is there a store in north Toronto you would recommend?

Thanks

OR

Would I be better forgetting the whole dish thing and going this route?:
