If I'm the head of The company I'd tell the plant Mgr...close the doors..we're moving out of US
What difference does it make if they were hiring hundreds of Koreans?

Trump can do far more to shut down illegals by arresting employers...

But guess where donations would go then?

When I saw this today these were my initial thoughts.

1) First, there is no way to say it otherwise. This was a big win for Trump's immigration policy.
2) Some auto union guys are going to be really pissed. It's possible they urged the action.
3) So much for the cursory comments that illegal migrants take jobs Americans don't want.

So now you support deporting illegal migrants?

Trump is simultaneously calling for more investment in the US, and chasing that investment away. They're not arresting workers, they're arresting supervisors and engineers that are doing tours/advising.

Hyundai is expanding the plant, so tonnes of suppliers will be there helping get it set up.

Looks like they were in the country illegally...So lets see how this shakes out.
I didn't make myself clear. Who cares if Hyundai shuts down the plant if they were hiring hundreds of illegal Koreans?

The original poster was advocating that Hyundai should pack up and say adios USA.

That was simply a naive comment. Hyundai needs the U.S. market. Any perceived retaliation on their part would be a very bad move. They just need to apologize and take the pain.

Japanese and Korean car companies have typically agreed to do assembly in the U.S. while bringing the parts from Asia.
Most of us who have owned Japanese cars know the replacement parts generally come from Japan.

That's demonstrably false.

Hondas are probably the most "American" cars by total volume. Kia's up there too, with the stuff they make in America.

Same holds true with trucks. The Ridgeline is miles more American than a Silverado:

These weren't 300 people hammering santa-cruzes together. These were people on business trips, or helping start up the new factory.

This is what I'm hearing now.
1) trump demanded South Korea invest in american plants
2) SK announces a big investment
3) ICE arrests the South Koreans there to build the plant

If I were with any other foreign company thinking of building in america I'd put a hold on it after this.

You don't see the problem with a major automobile manufacturer bringing workers into the U.S. illegally.

This has to be a red line. This can't be another let's bash the Trump Administration.
What do you think the UAW is going to say about this?

PS- In recent years, I have had to wait for parts from Japan for my automobile. You know supply chain issues. Perhaps some Asian auto manufacturers have better records of domestic content.

I don't think it's an overgeneralized anecdote. Hyundai U.S. was moving to source more parts domestically under pressure from tariffs.
In any event, you live long enough you see these things come and go. Some things are just P.R.

Yes, you do see this problem with other major manufacturers in the US:

Good for you for owning a car assembled in Japan, and buying dealer parts.

I had to wait 6 weeks for a traction battery for my Wrangler, and that's a VERY domestically produced car.

Rock Auto sends me parts for my 15 year old Suzuki overnight.

Now you see the extent of the problem here............or maybe you don't.
I'm not saying we don't need immigrants. I'm just saying it has to be controlled. Wages for unskilled labor are always under pressure.

Good for you for owning a car assembled in Japan, and buying dealer parts.
I try to buy aftermarket parts when its practical and possible, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a domestic part.

I think if you are going to insist on these policies they should be comprehensive and punish employers. I think they should bring back migrant worker visas for farm, and other low level work. It would solve a lot of these issues on both ends.

And go after the exploiters, not the exploited.

They still need business B1 Visas if they overstay their 90 day ETSA visa

Do you have proof they were there illegally?
ICE has been disappearing legal and illegal immigrants and its unlikely a massive investment by a major auto company would be under the table and not totally above board right now. My last contract in the states they paid a lot of attention to making it as clear and legit as possible. Nobody is trying to risk ICE.
