My precautions: I use the Opera browser but only for TERB (and any other naughty sites) and I use IE only for regular browsing. Opera has a menu item for deleting personal details which I use after every session.

I know IE has the same thing but it's a little more awkward to use and this way it doesn't look suspiciously like someone has been trying to cover their tracks.

Works for me. So far. Knock on wood.

Use Windows XP or 2000pro, create different user profiles with password for you and the gf and there you go! (no password required for her if she don't want it.) Your browsing habits are safe since IE keeps favorites and history in private folders for each users. As long as you don't download stuff, all should be good! (Start - Settings - ControlPanel - user accounts - Create new account...)

I forgot! Don't make the GF a "system administrator", only as a "limited user" and... DON"T LEAVE THE PC LOGGED when you go to the washroom!! Log off or lock it! Screen saver that lock after 2 minutes is a good bet also.

If she's more of a guru than you are, then security will become more complex. You can always play with the user security and user rights on the PC's directories but it gets tricky and you could lock yourself out if not carefull!

Boy this board is starting to sound like my job - PDF files, security settings, Windows XP. Any day now someone's going to post a question about why their Excel macro that caculates their hobbying budget no longer works like it used to since they upgraded to Office 2003.



Anyway, I still think using Opera is the easiest, safest, cheapest, least suspicious way to go. As long as you remember to delete your private info after every session. And even if you forget once in a while, chances are nobody else will be using Opera anyway.

The case of the Excel macro is a case of "too many changes at the same time". The user upgraded to Office 2003 at the same time he changed his hobbyist habits. The Excel macro stopped working because the user went from LDL to HDL and his budget can't sustain it, not because of Office 2003! It's not a bug, it's intended to be that way! Division by zero is illegal...

Believe me! Using only one browser with different accounts is WAYYY easier! No files to erase (and to forgot to erase) and no embarassing question like "what's that program for honey?" You only need to do the setup once and forget about it. After that, no question asked, beside maybe if she ask why the different users then, you just say you like a different desktop theme than hers.

Anyways, if Opera works for you, that's the best! What counts is that you are comfortable enough you are not leaving "traces" and you know how to do it and, I would say that for now, you do!
