In search of a new furnace, need advice

So my old one broke down since I used it recently. I've been looking at single and 2 stage furnaces. Are the 2 stage furnaces really that efficient? I know the run at a low mode for a longer time then switch to a high mode when needed. If it's running at a longer time at a low mode, doesn't that use more energy? Is it all about comfort and not efficiency. I also read the are more complicated and require more expensive repairs and they don't last as long.

I am leaning towards a single stage as I was happy with the heating before.

Any thoughts. Thx

I have a Trane two stage and it is top notch. Very efficient and came with 12 years parts and labor warranty.

I have a Trane two stage and have replaced the gas valve on it twice.Luckly both times were under warranty. Now the warrant is expired so I hope it doesn't go again.

Two stage are more gas efficient in my experience. They are also a more consistent heat and I haven't had any problems with mine. Part of the efficiency gain has to due with the newer variable power blower motors which help a lot with your electricity bill.

Consider yourself lucky to have the furnace go down now, unlike most people who find out when it is cold and the furnace installers are able to gouge you.

Many 2 stage furnaces don't even use the second stage. 2nd stage usually kicks on if heat demand hasn't been met within a designated time (typically 10-15 minutes). This can be adjusted through thermostat heat anticipator settings and dip switches in the furnace itself. I personally would opt for a 2 stage if I planned on having a the house for several years. Heat recovery time is faster with a 2 stage when there are big temperature fluctuations.
