Just like pilots are limited to the number of hours they can fly per month, cops need to be limited to the number of hours they can work at night or certain high stress areas.

Cops are constantly exposed to the worst of society. Seeing such despicable people will change you. Remember cops were human when they started. It is a horrible job. I would never recommend it to even my least favorite people. (You know who you are.)

Stress will either harden metal or create cracks in it.

That is true, but clearly many cops are not suited to begin with. Their behavior cannot be attributed to stress. It seems that American cops are very different from police around the world. Many countries, the police are very kind, professional, and respectful.

My theories are:

1) American police represent the American mindset. Americans are very aggressive by nature, and so the police are also like that. Japanese police are very polite and gentle, just like the Japanese people

2) Lack of quality. American, police do not have to go to college, and their training is very short. In many countries the training is at least two years long and a college degree is required. Airplane pilots require a college degree. Many police seem like they are very uneducated, with tattoos, and very low intelligence. probably they didn’t do well in school.

3) American police are in constant fear of their lives. Americans own more guns than other countries, and any stop can be their last stop. That is why they are paranoid and will use deadly force to save their own.

4) Video game and media. There is no doubt that many of these cops played violent video games where shooting and killing are rewarded, so they are desensitized to it. Also, of course, movies with violence and shooting make it normalized.

5) Poor mental and physical health. Low self-esteem, anxiety, stress, anger,, frustration the same reason why road rage is common. Americans have a very unhealthy diet, drinking energy, drinks, lots of sugar, caffeine and, of course, drugs. Many are physically unhealthy, and this contributes to mental problems as well.

6) Family upbringing. Americans in general are more Christian, and with it comes strict upbringing. Many police come from family where the father was authoritarian. They would yell and beat their kids. Children who were brought up like this, probably repeat this behavior to their suspects. It seems like many of the cops that are violent, or tell their suspects “Do what I say, when I tell you to!” Are reliving what their father said to them when they themselves did something wrong. Many cops commit domestic, violence, and this may be because their fathers were abusive.

7) The militarization of American police. American police are now dressed in military gear, and their behavior is becoming more violent and militarized. The police in Japan are dressed very casually, not with heavy gear. I think this uniform plays a role in how they feel and act.

8) Racism. I think that many American cops are indeed racist. This racism leads to unjustified arrests and violence against minorities.

Culture sure plays a role. I personally think is primarily due to just one factor. American policing culture.

The American police work on a us vs them basis. This explains why when a car backfired as it passed a parked police vehicle, the cop thought he was being fired at. The ENTIRE precinct showed up, chased the car down and shot the passenger and the driver to death, only to later learn that it was a backfire. Plus the American police always are on a power trip, they think they are above the law and operate outside of it. I also think the policing institution is inherently racist. So even if a rookie is not racist, their ways of working are racist. So they will end up stopping more young black men than young white men for example. This leads to disproportionate policing and aberrant behaviours like being ready to shoot black men more easily than they are, white men.

The other issue in my opinion is low quality training. Michael A Wood, a former Baltimore cop talks about how police cant even shoot targets at target practice in a lot of cases.

Most attempts at reform fail because they don't address the underlying police culture.

Several cops in the US come from the military, where disobedience is not tolerated.
They bring the same mindset to policing with devastating consequences. Which is why police brutality continues unabated
