Well, it's just past 5:30 a.m. and I've been tossing and turning since about 1. :-( I haven't had this problem much lately but used to deal with it quite a bit a couple of years ago. It seems like I've tried everything with varying degrees of success. What really works? Opinions? This sucks.....

have the same problem.

What works for me: don't eat after 7 pm, no coffee or tea after 4pm, a warm glass of milk just before bed, and doing a sort of progressive muscle relaxation exercise when I'm lying down. That knocks me right out.
The killer for me was snacking too close to bedtime.

I've had the same problem for many years.

Don't watch TV too close to bed time. It stimulates brain activity. Go figure.
Eat a banana about an hour before bed. It's a natural sleep aid.

Good sex before you go to sleep would also help. Let me know if you need any help with that.

I take 500 MG of vitamin B6 every night right before I go to bed. The first few nights you might feel very flushed (like a fever) but in my case I only felt that twice. Now I sleep like a baby every night.

LMFAO!!!!

Honest, a nice cup of warm milk, it works and there's a scientific basis behind it.

It's warm and cosy, just like a blanket but on the inside AND it's good for you.

Yes, warm milk really does help. You can also learn meditation/relaxation techniques which will help. I have the same issue, and occasionally take a prescription sleeping pill, but I try not to do that often.

usually means your not tired enough. do some mild excercise. if you are energetic, go for a run, if not so, just take a walk or do some mild cardio, and take a shower, eat some cookies and milk relax watch tv, you'll be in dreamland in no time.

Ativan in the low dose - it really works when you must get some sleep and are suffering from insomnia. Ask your doctor for a prescription and use sparingly on nights when you are tossing and turning. It's also amazing for sleeping on an airplane to avoid jet lag (or reduce it at least).

I had to see my doctor and try different things I even went to get myself the relaxing music they use in spas. and I got myself those sleeping mask and ear plugs.

and sleeping pills, what finally did it for me was drinking warm tea before bed and a sleep mask with ear plugs.

Sometimes unresolved stress stops you from having a good night sleep so you want to think of everything that might interupt you getting some good rest.

and also sleeping with ear plugs and the mask might be just what you need but its a trial and error good luck.

Not great advice. Insomnia does not mean "you are not tired enough". Most people that suffer insomnia are exhausted!

Furthermore, exercise and cardio releases stimulants from our brains which excites us and thus...further inhibits sleep. (work out earlier in the day). Eating (cookies and milk) and watching TV as you suggest, is not great either. Shut everything off...except perhaps soothing music and/or pick up a book.

I guess what works for one person does not work for another. i had sleeping problems before too when i was in school because i had to keep schedule, and tried everything doctors suggested, nothing worked escept for zopiclone. but i decided drug is not a good solution. but now i dont have a fixed schedule job, i get to sleep anytime i want the problem is gone!
if i read book or music i get so excited, TV knocks me out every time. also if i really cannot sleep in 15 minutes, i dont even try, i get up do stuff until i cannot keep awake anymore, even if means i skip sleep for the night. it is good i dont have a fixed schedule occupation. The OP is an SP, she is flexible work too no? shouldn't be a problem.

Sometimes insomnia can be caused by stress and/or anxiety. If this is the case, talk to your GP about a possible prescription for Clonazepam. one 0.5.mg tablet is sufficient to help you fall asleep within an hour after taking it. This medication is beneficial as a PRN, and the sedative effect will have worn off by morning.
