For a large glorified iTouch/netbook???$599 for 32GB. ATT exclusive contract...for now
LOL - want to bet.....For a large glorified iTouch/netbook???
What a bargain!
It will be a huge hit just like the MacBook Air was.....![]()
The iPad is unlocked, you can use it on any carrier. Apple negoiated a deal with AT&T for $30 a month unlimted data but you can use it on any carrier you want. The $599 32 Gb version is WiFi only. If you want 3G then you have to add another $130 ($729) to get the 3G version. http://www.apple.com/ipad/pricing/$599 for 32GB. ATT exclusive contract...for now
The reason I listed myself and my mother is that we are at the extreme opposite ends of user profile. I'll buy her the cheapest model because she'll rarely leave the house with it, it'll be web/email for dummies (with apologies to my mother) with instant on and no system maintenance. I'll use it for all the mobile features.....The iPad is unlocked, you can use it on any carrier. I think it's a cool device but I don't see what it'll do that an iPhone and a MacBook/MacBook Pro can do. It doesn't support Flash, it doesn't have multitasking, no camera, 4:3 display, and it's too big to carry around casuall like a cell phone. Now, if they had included the full version of OS X for the same price then yeah it would be really be the next "big thing".
I thought it was funny that Jobs criticised netbooks for being "cheap laptops". The iPad is just an expensive iPod Touch. Besides the usual fanboys I can see it appealing to people who take take public transit or fly a lot and to students (since you can get textbooks on it) but I don't know how much general appeal it'll have.
So the question is, how many iPads did you order?.....The reason I listed myself and my mother is that we are at the extreme opposite ends of user profile. Why would anyone use a portable device if they rarely leave the house? Maybe reading in bed, finding recipes or playing Scrabble while on the shitter I suppose. The reason I listed myself and my mother is that we are at the extreme opposite ends of user profile. I wish it were 16:9 but I can't think of many OSX apps I'd want to run on it. I'd like a version of PPT for it, then I could leave the laptop at home.

She sits in the family room in a soft chair with a laptop on her lap - this will be easier. Why would anyone use a portable device if they rarely leave the house? Maybe reading in bed, finding recipes or playing Scrabble while on the shitter I suppose.
It will be a niche product, but I think that niche will be large (if that makes any sense at all). I think the game potential is amazing, no games yet worthy of it but the need for speed demo was impressive - steering with the accelerator is a great idea.....I don't know, I can access the internet from my blackberry but I take i with me becuase it can fit in my pocket. The iPad is not something that can easily fit in a pocket. Now if I'm going to work, or on a trip, that's different since I'm already carring a bag with me. However, I'm I'm out with friends or out shopping I really don't want to carry around something the size of an iPad; I want something that'll fit in my pocket.
The pricing isn't all that great either. For true mobility you'll need to spend at least $630 + tax to get the 16 GB model with 3G plus $30 a month for data. That's on top of any existing plan for a smart phone. If you're just going to keep it at home then yeah it's more affordable but if you're doing that then why not get a netbook? If you want OS X in a small form factor just get a Dell Mini 10 and put OS X on it.
The iPod and iPhone were game changers as they redefined what a media player and cell phone could be. However, with the iPad I don't see it doing anything that a $400 netbook can't do.
Who knows, I might be wrong and this might be the next big thing. Right now I don't see it.
I believe that sometime a convergence between phone, mobile computing and PC will occur. Is this it?It will be a niche product, but I think that niche will be large (if that makes any sense at all). Yeah that does make sense and it's sort of what I was thinking. I can see it being really popular for people who have to take a train to work or fly a lot. It's a lot easier to watch videos, check email, do work with something like the iPad then with a netbook or laptop. It will be a niche product, but I think that niche will be large (if that makes any sense at all).
