iPad2 vs. iPad3?

I was reading that the iPad3 is rumoured to have an upgraded processor that will allow you to watch full HD on your iPad. To be honest, I didn't know you couldn't do that with iPad2.

I'm going to buy an iPad and was going to buy the iPad 2 but what do I need to know about what the iPad 2 can't do that may make me want to wait?

I primarily want it to watch movies/videos remotely, check my e-mail remotely, surf the web in bed, use my iPhone apps, and view pdf documents. I'm not interested in other tablets and the iPad will be more of a toy (I'll use my laptop or PC for serious computer work).

Ipad really isn't great for watching movies because it is a 4x3 screen and only 1024x768. Maybe they are planning on changing that for the 3rd generation.

In the current market, the 'next' generation will always be enticing and only a few months away no matter what you get. Either get something you like now or wait until the 3 comes out and buy a two cheap off one of the apple junkies who need the latest and ditch their old one.

The rumors were once that the iPad 3 would go on sale before xmas, now it looks like in the first half of 2012....

As Powershot said it's not a 16:9 screen but it's still a good mobile movie/TV viewer IMHO.... there are also multiple streaming options (PBS, ABC, Netflix)

I guess it is a YMMV as to wether you like the iPad for movies. I watch a lot of Netflix and digital media at home (using airvideo) and I think the screen is perfect. I have a first Gen iPad and haven't had any performance or quality issues with the video at all.

There isn't much point of having 1080P on a small screen IMHO.

My Samsung Galaxy has 720p high def recording, well worth having on a tablet if it's fully capable on a smaller device like a phone. ;)

It would be nice if Apple would the make ipad 3 with a battery that the user could change easily. A friend of mine let me play with her Samsung Galaxy (the small form factor one), the playback is pretty good.

That's because Apple figures that by the time the battery goes dead the iPad4 will be out for you to buy...:eyebrows:

It is possible to change the battery, but it is a major pain in the ass. I dropped my iPad and damaged the aluminum shell. I found a used aluminum shell online and it took me about an hour to replace it.

Based on my experience with that, I can tell you that the batteries are attached to the aluminum shell with glue dots, and it requires every component be removed to get access to them.

I hope by the time all the batteries in iPads start to need replacing someone will offer the aluminum shell with the batteries glued in place as a single orderable replacement part.

The main thing to me would be whether ipad3 would have a USB connector, so that you could attach a flash drive. It is a real PITA getting stuff on and off an ipad/ipad2, you are forced to use Apple's retarded iTunes thing.

Doing that voids your warranty. Also, with recent iPhones anyway Apple has begun using patented screws that cannot be unscrewed using any regular screwdriver--you need their special tool. I don't know if they have begun doing that with ipads yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if ipad2 can't be unscrewed using anything but their patented screwdriver.

They patented it so that they could prevent anyone from selling one to the public...

the hobby needs more capitalism
Word on the street is the iPad 3 will be coming with retina display (the same type the iPhone 4 uses). I suspect the iPad 3 will be using the A6 processor, too. This means faster performance as the iPad 2 is using the A5 one.

If this is a big deal for you, I'd wait. Otherwise, go for it.

It goes without saying that busting open the device voids the warranty and I was obviously not worried about that as I had already dropped it and damaged the shell.

BTW , the iPad does have a USB connection, but you have to buy the camera connection kit for $35. It also provides an SD card reader in the same package. I carry them in my camera bag to upload pictures via USB or SD card when I am on the road. Unfortunately you can not use the SD card reader to move pictures off the iPad, however when you plug in the iPad to you PC you can read it like a USB drive to transfer pictures. You do not have to use iTunes.

Really? My wife has an iPad, but I don't have one and I haven't used hers that much. I thought you had to use iTunes to copy stufff onto and off of the iPad. Do you need the camera kit in order to use it like a USB drive? Or can you do that using the syn cable that it comes with? She doesn't have the camera kit but it would be worth buying if it makes that much of a difference.
