So, I’m looking to upgrade my iPhone. If I purchase a phone, say from Orchard, is it just a matter of installing my SIM card in the new phone and I’m done? Connected to my plan and everything else switched to the new phone?

That's what I have always done. I just pick up cheapo used IPhones from the local IPhone repair 'n trade kiosk. A couple years ago, I picked up an IPhone 8. I backed up my IP7 to my Itunes for Windows app, then slipped the SIM card into the new IP8 and copied my back-up into the IP8. The IP7 got tossed into a draw and I walked off w a fully usable IP8.

Get a Samsung Galaxy s9 or 10, if you want a small compact decent phone for a good price (although the 10s are still expensive for an older phone, but amazing builds, or any recent Samsung will do for that matter.
Myself along with 99% of the people I know personally stay away from iPhones, so limiting, you're locked into their echo system and insanely overpriced. But for $100 you can get a nice compact Galaxy S9, friend did, he loves it.

edit - spelling/grammer ooops

Would it work the same way, just put in the SIM card, or is that just an iPhone thing?

Make sure the phone you are getting from Orchatd
is unlocked so that you can use your current service provider with your SIM card.

Yes, and you can download an app that will transfer all you files and data from your old iPhone to your new one.

I think the newest iPhones 14 and 15 only support virtual or eSIM now. Most cell carriers should support eSIM though so they should be able to "convert" your physical card. The benefit is that you don't need to switch cards when you travel or the next time you upgrade.

There are few more steps involved to move your existing data, and apps to the new phone.
Step 1: Take an icloud backup of the old iphone
Step 2: While setting your new phone, login in to icloud again and select restore from icloud and that ways you will find all of your existing phone data (contacts, photos) and apps moved to the new phone as well.
