I think it's the perfect netbook. Small enough that you use it anywhere but the platform is powerful to provide a desktop like experience.

That being said, please detail what you'd actually use it for. Walk me (and the rest of us) through a day's usage. And what your exceptions for the device and experience would be.

Thanks.

Mine was excellent. I just recently upgraded to the iPhone 3GS, but had the 32gb Touch for about a year. I was recently in southern Mexico for a couple of weeks (traveled through the state of Chiapas). I found wifi hotspots in many places, and at all of the hotels we stayed in. The Touch was awesome for that, since it's literally a pocket computer. Browsing websites with it is amazing, and it's a lot more portable than a laptop, or even a netbook.

The battery life is not bad, but it does go down pretty quick if you're playing games with it. One option is to get an extra battery that you can plug in and recharge your Touch with it. There are some for about $50, but I came across one from the US that is around $10! The shipping is inexpensive, and I got it delivered within a week of ordering it. You can check it out here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10831&cs_id=1083110&p_id=5867&seq=1&format=2

They list a limit of 1 battery per person, but if you order additional times (one battery per order), they don't limit it. I ordered two of them, using separate orders, and they both arrived separately on the same day. There is no cheaper shipping benefit to ordering 2 or more anyways, so the cost is the same. My recommendation is if you're going to be traveling a lot, and you expect to use it quite a bit, ordering two batteries is a very inexpensive option, and you'll be totally set with 2 additional batteries. You can use the Touch with the add-on battery plugged in, or you can charge your Touch battery with the add-on (it acts like you plugged it into a USB charger and charges when plugged in). For normal use, the internal battery is fine. But for heavy use (ie. playing games on the plane, or surfing for long periods of time in wifi hotspots), having the extra battery will save your ass! lol

One thing to note is with the Touch design, the headphone jack is at the bottom of the device, right beside the universal dock connector. This will prevent you from using your headphones while the add-on battery is plugged in. Just an FYI for you.

As to the Touch itself, it's amazing! I used it for email, with multiple email accounts set up with it. Having mobile email for free whenever you have wifi is very handy. And 100,000 apps available in the app store, many of them free, makes it a very good solution for someone needing a pocket PC!

Cheers :)

You'll love the free Facebook app that you can get through iTunes. Browse the app store. Something tells me you're going to buy one right after you start seeing all of the amazing apps you can get for it. And don't forget, it's an awesome iPod as well, including photo viewing and videos too!

Just got one last week for someone , was setting it up with contents and apps.
I have played with iPhone before and I still have to say that the ease of use is great.

Surfing via wifi is fine, considering that I am more used to something tactile with buttons and track ball.

Fantastic display, as expected.

Now it is still on sale at FS $ 189.99. 8GB
For that price is quite good especially if you don't need to port data in from flash cards or USB sticks and are just looking for something portable to browse the web and play media.

... remember to get a screen protector as well for finger grease and what not.

I liked mine, don't use it much now as I have a iPhone. I used it as a remote for my whole house audio system that's driven by iTunes..... when I go on trips I load it up with ripped movies and let my son use it.... I've made several terb posts from it..... would be nice if Fred offered a mobile friendly version of TERB

Apple is having a Black Friday online worldwide.

I'd wait till Friday before buying one from Future Shop. Or if Future Shop's price is a special which expires Thursday, I'd buy online, arrange for local pickup at a store and wait for Friday. If Apple's price is better than what you paid at FS, don't pick up your order. After a few days, it'll automatically cancel and you will not be charged as they do that at the store.

Don't get the 8 GB. The new 32GB and 64 have upgraded processor and video. Unless you like lots of movies, the 32 is plenty. Ipod Touch movies are about 1 gig in size usually.

After you get used to it, and you've reached the limits of the apple store, jailbreak and you're unlimited! if you're a map nut, wait till you try offmaps. i use it at home to check email in the morning. it's up in a second and inside of 15 seconds I've reviewed new email, and I'm done! there's been plenty a coffee shop where I check my email in line. and wifi is cropping up everywhere. get it. i think it's the best new device since cell phones.

Be careful about jailbreaking it.

Good Point

"Be careful about jailbreaking it."

I'd like to think that anyone savvy enough to jailbreak knows the 10 second fix to this, but I'd probably be wrong. Just change the password. How many wireless routers are setup using the default password? Plenty. That's not as sexy so it doesn't get much press.

There is a rumour thaat Apple will release an updated Ipod Touch in December. Might be worth waiting or just buy from Costco right away and return it if the new one has features/price point that attracts you.

Here is a pretty good review on Touch 8 and 32/62 GB , may help to decide which model best suits your need:

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-touch-Generation-NEWEST-MODEL/dp/B002M3SOBU

Short list of pros and cons about the iPod touch

Pros:
-Slick,small and light device
-Great touch screen
-The BEST web browser on a portable device
-Amazing video/music playback
-App Store (Too many cool applications for Free)
-Display screen is clear and bright
-No bugs and annoying stuff a very reliable hardware
-64GB Flash based mp3 player

Cons:
-Not much of an upgrade over 2G (people were disappointed because they did not get upgrades like camera/OLED/etc)
-Weaker battery, only lasts 30 hours for music playback versus 2G iPod touch 36 Hours music playback
-Expensive for the 64GB version
-Still no FM radio without the use of online applications
-Bluetooth is still half locked

WTF happened to Zune in Canada anyway ,did they pull out of the Canadian market for the moment or what ? Big box stores don't cary them any more.

Before I got the iPod Classic this year I seriously did consider Zune ( not HD ) as Radio shit had them on sale with media kit , almost $50 cheaper than Ipod Classic then. Glad I went for the Classic though, which I use only for music.

Not sure why the old ones got pulled, I noticed that to. I did read a press release from MS saying that the Zune HD was coming to Canada but there was no official release date on it. I Googled it today but couldn't find anything.

AFAIK, MS killed off the older Zunes when they released the Zune HD.

I'd skip the Zune HD solely based on their lack of an App Store.

Ipod touch works great with Skype... as good as a free cell phone when you are connected.

the last thing I use my Ipod touch for is for listening to music (use my compact little zen nano for that) and I don't watch videos on the touch... (I prefer a 50" HDTV plasma)

I'm on my touch right now lurking on terb...

Exactly ... left me scratching my head. I actually quite like the look of the Zune HD.
