iPod Touch wifi (where?)

Hey Terbotians,

Thanks once again for your valuable input into the 'iPod Touch Good/Bad' posting.

You guys rock!!!

One final question though:

So, what happens if I'm in an area that has wifi, asks me whether I wanna connect, but then also asks for a password key in order to connect.
Am I SOL?

Or does wifi only work in area where there is no locked feature?

Will this kinda thing happen to me all the time?
I thought the whole idea of getting a product with wifi access is so I can get free access to internet where ever I go.

Once again, your input is truly appreciated.

Let's put it this way...
If you walk up to someone's front door and they ask you for a key to be able to open the door, do you think you can get in without having that key? Not trying to be a smartass....just trying to simply it for you...

It would be lovely to have FREE wi-fi all over the place, but unfortunately son...you're living in T.O, where'd one thing's 4 sure....You'll get 'milked' more than a fucking cow!!! In other words, NO FREE Wi-fi, UNLESS someone has forgotten to secure their wi-fi with a password, thus, leaving it wide open for anyone to connect...
Some places (very few in this city) have graciously left open networks for their customers, or any passersby, to be able to connect to their wi-fi for free. Rosie believes that there are a few Starbucks, Sony stores, for example, that have FREE complimentary wi-fi available to anyone within range ...

It's sad really. Several US cities offer FREE city-wide wi-fi:

http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusin...ons/5-most-wifi-friendly-american-cities.aspx

, but here, Toronto HYDRO will charge us through the nose to use the city-wide wi-fi that they're building in downtown Toronto.

Rosie personally knows someone who was on a committee that was looking into setting up free city-wide wi-fi but that committee was CRUSHED to bits, and fairy dust when someone with tons of money realized that they could make even more money by charging citizens to use the wi-fi infrastructure...then Toronto Hydro auto-magically announced their plan to build that infrastructure....but being as gracious as they are, they will let us use it for free.....only to help them fine-tune it. Then they'll lock it up tighter than a preacher's daughter's panties once it's finely tuned.

....and you see Little Johnny? That's where babies cum from...
Wait! What was the fucking kwestion again?!
Oh boy....Rosie did it again....

SOrry dude!

I found a few places whee it's free, but I've subscribed to Boingo (see my earlier thread on this board on this topic) and couldn't be happier. I pay $7.95 US a month and certainly get more than my money's worth. Plus it works in something like 100,000 locations world-wide.

Wi-fi isn't provided by Apple. It's the same as a laptop. You're connecting to whoever's wi-fi access point you stumble across. If they've chosen to password protect it, tough titty.

Go with Boingo or Boldstreet.

If you are using Bell for your internet connection
"Free Wi-Fi Internet access at over 650 Starbucks® locations across Canada"

If you are using Rogers
"All Rogers Internet customers can now access one hour of FREE Wi-Fi per day. Simply log in at any supported hotspot with your Rogers.com email address."

Good one. That reminds me, I know if you have a Starbucks card, you're entitled to one hour of free wi-fi daily.

Throw $5 bucks on a card and enjoy. I'd read the fine print to be familiar with how often you need to use or top up the card to keep your balance.

As mentioned, with a Starbucks card and one purchase a month, you get wifi free for 2 hours a day. Made in Japan has it free utilizing wireless toronto (harbourfront too). at least one mcdonald's (27/carrier) has it available for the customers. there's others around. just check while you're walking around. try to be sure it's a real wifi access point. not a man-in-the-middle. i wouldn't be doing banking away from home anyway. be careful.

As long as you use SSL, you'll be fine. My brokerage (not bank) offers something similar to RSA SecureID when logging in.

What this means is you carry a small device with you that'll generate a new random numeric sequence every minute or so. When you log into your account with your password, you'll be prompted to look at your device and key in whatever numbers are currently on screen.

Both very cool and very secure.

Get the WiFiFoFum app. It looks like a submarine sonar screen. It tells you where there are wifi in proximity to you. It took a while but I was able to identify where there are free/unencrypted wifi near the places that I usually visit.

Some of the newer Countrystyles have free wifi in Toronto and I noticed that some of the newer McDonald's in Hamilton have free wifi. :)

yup, I use one called Wifi Toronto, and it works well too. Gives you a list of free wifi locations listed by proximity.
