I saw this story this morning. On its face, it seems a bit bizarre. Liberal media isn't reporting on it, but it's early. If this is indeed true, it certainly seems newsworthy. If true, it also confirms that some in our government think they have political obligations to fulfill in their government role.

The IRS sends you a letter. They don't knock on your door to speak with you.

It's early in the news cycle. If it is true, it could also just be a stupid government employee. If the IRS agent was acting on the orders of idiots higher-up, they will close ranks somewhere fairly low in the chain of command.

Although, they did go after Dems' opponents during the Obama's years, so it wouldn't exactly be unprecedented. Our own government used financial "tools " to go after its opponents.

They will go after anyone questioning the war machine with an audience.
Wait, are you finally going to the ""The US is doing too much to help Ukraine" side?

Not only that, the IRS warned him that someone may have targeted him for Identity theft.
Trying to help him is clearly an attack by the perfidious Deep State forces that hate Elon Musk and Putin and are afraid of the bold truth teller that is (checks notes) Matt Taibbi?

It's early in the news cycle.
This is the only relevant thing here.
Taibbi telling a story and the WSJ opinion page wanting to trumpet it isn't even really news.

Right now it is wonderfully vague and sinister to people who want it to be with no actual meat on the bones or even any proof of any kind as far as I can see.

If more stuff comes out, let's look at it.

But Taibbi isn't exactly a threat, so why anyone would target him so hamfistedly is beyond me.

If he was a threat, we'd be seeing all the child porn or something.

Don't be stupid. Putin is a clear threat. But there is nothing wrong with questioning US policy. Its how you get better policy.

But pretending Taibbi is someone who "questions policy" as some kind of brave truth teller is kind of inane.

It really doesn't matter, does it? If the IRS visited his house unannounced that would be a major breach in protocol. So far the IRS has been silent on this matter.

We've become so partisan that we can't even agree that this was inappropriate. Instead, you are here criticizing Matt Taibbi.

Ok... so WHAT was the visit all about? Has Taibbi made any sort of statement?

If the visit was "sheer intimidation", why doesn't Taibbi come out and make a statement to that effect?

Because that's not as much fun as meeting the Revenue people because they want to help you find an identity thief and then prickishly mis-characterizing what they just did as "harassment"?

I did not know who Taibibi was before the whole Twitter files thingy. Is he THAT important?

Maybe he didnt pay his taxes.

Also is he that big a critic of the Ukraine assitance?

Just because you personally don't like him doesn't make his work unimportant. In this age of bought corporate media we need as much independent journalism as possible.
He is bought media, though.
Especially now as Musk's stenographer.

He hasn't been relevant since the mid-2010s and really dropped off completely once he found he could get paid well doing the grievance market via substack.
He's barely better than Greenwald these days.

I don't think it is.
It isn't the most common, but they do contact people directly by showing up.

Can you find me something saying it would be a major breach of protocol other than Taibbi wanting to sound important?

Because I have no reason to think anything inappropriate here has actually happened.
One - Taibbi may just be lying about the incident.
Two - An IRS agent showing up to your door appears to be nothing unusual.
