Is it normal to have this many ties in the opening round of the WC?

I know ties are not uncommon in soccer but I would have assumed that the top teams can cream their (weaker) opponents but except for Germany over Australia, a lot of games have been close (and have ended up in ties). So, it is wise to start betting on ties or (on Asian handicap) take the underdog team +1/2 goal?

There are not a lot of weak teams at the world cup. Look at the game between Portugal and the Ivory Coast today. Most people would have bet on portugal, but even before the finals, portugal had difficulty in qualifying in a group where they lost to Denmark in Lisbon.

And don't forget about the new ball. Seriously... I played with it and it's like playing with a freakin' oversized indian rubber ball!! The spin is crazy... the bounce, extreme... and notice how there is a certain lack of control when passes or taking passes occur. It also hurts the scorelines when the parity of all the teams involved is probably at the greatest level that I can ever remember. And that parity isn't due to the fact that everyone is so good. I don't remember watching so many teams with such great strengths... yet such great weaknesses, as well. If you're going to have an average team... this is the year!!

It's oxymoron Canadians talking about soccer. You'll forget all about it in three weeks time.

yes. ties are very common in soccer in general, but especially for WC play... focus is not on winning, but not losing.

Especially in the first game of the round robin play. Later in the round robin, teams have to win in order to proceed, and in the elimination rounds, there is no such thing as a tie.

Almost all the ties are 0-0. What rational person watches a bunch of guys in shorts run around for 90 minutes and the final score is 0-0?

Statistically this is actually the most boring world cup ever (so far)

The lowest goals per game at a world cup up to this point is 2.12. So far at this world cup the average goals per game is 1.56

Things will start to open up when we get into the 2nd and 3rd games of the groups as teams start to get desparate and go for it.

Rockslinger, don't make comments on things you havent a clue about.

I confess I am not a soccer fan but I do know quite a bit about sports having both played and watched many of them. Anyway, I'll give it a rest. Wake me up when they score a goal. Hee, hee, hee.
