Jarvis St. bike lanes will be re-examined

TORONTO - The Jarvis St. bike lanes, a major victory for former mayor David Miller, could be pulled off the road.

Mayor Rob Ford’s regime is now prepared to undo the road renovations completed just last year at a cost of around $65,000.

As a councillor and mayoral candidate, Ford raged against removing the reversible centre lane on the busy north-south corridor to install the bicycle lanes on both sides of busy road, adding time to drivers’ commutes.

Public works chairman Denzil Minnan-Wong said he thinks there is an appetite on council to revisit the controversial bike lanes.

“I’ve heard from many councillors that they would like to revisit this issue,” Minnan-Wong said.

He is proposing a separated bike lane plan in the downtown core but the network doesn’t call for such lanes on Jarvis St. because it is a primary north-south route.

“The separated bike lanes that I’m proposing recommends using Sherbourne St., which is a couple blocks away, which in some ways would make Jarvis St. (bike lanes)...less necessary,” Minnan-Wong said.

Public works will vote on an omnibus bike lane proposal in June.

But removing the lanes is “not a priority for this administration,” Ford’s spokesman, Adrienne Batra, stressed.

“Is it something we are considering looking into? Absolutely,” Batra said. “Right now, we’re more worried about getting the city’s finances under control and that’s where our focus is...this is not something that is happening tomorrow.”

But the mayor’s office has heard from a number of people concerned about the issue, she said.

Local councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam said she learned the street’s bike lanes could be in jeopardy through social media Wednesday.

“It’s a big surprise,” Wong-Tam said. “I’ve spoken to the mayor’s office and said if anything happens on Jarvis, it should happen with full community consultation.”

The Ward 27 councillor said she is trying to revitalize the east side of downtown.

“It is all hinging on the economic viability of Jarvis and the improvements along Jarvis,” Wong-Tam said.

Councillor Adam Vaughan called it a “war on the bike.”

“I’ve driven up and down Jarvis on bike and in a car, it’s no different than it was before,” Vaughan said. “It’s just a lot of time and fury and wasted energy.”

But Minnan-Wong countered Ford is the far more bike-friendly mayor when compared to Miller.

I like bike lanes when I'm riding my bike but removing the revisable 5th. lane on Jarvis street was a stupid idea, plain and simple. Thank you David Miller.

You want to go north or south, take Sherbourne (which has bike lanes) or Church. What's the big deal.

This thread ought to generate some good "I hate fucking cyclists - I hate fucking drivers" replies! :)

Vaughan is delusional. I've been commuting on Jarvis for five years. The stupid reconfiguration has added, on average, 5 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening. All accounted for by left turn cockblockers. Go ahead and add bike lanes, but not to major commuting arteries.

it was a targeted attack on the car by the bike fascists.....take all cars off church and have just bikes and pedestrians, but don't fuck with the major arteries.

Reducing traffic flow increases air polution. How is that a good thing?

“I’ve driven up and down Jarvis on bike and in a car, it’s no different than it was before,” Vaughan said... Adam, you are an idiot. Did you not read the latest study that determined it has increase driving times, significantly? I highly doubt your tour up and down Jarvis is as accurate as a traffic study. Dumbass!

Fuck, how much will it cost to put all the lane control gear back?

It's one thing to rip it out, it's another to put it back.

Stupid.

The decision was made, it's not a horrible one. Live with it.

it might not change if you don't have to work business hours. if you are driving up jarvis at night looking for street action or a mp, then the bike lanes have probably havent made any impact

Silly idea to mix cars and bikes on major arteries. Don’t see many bikes on Jarvis, not many bike riders are brave enough to use it.

And, now we have these rent a bikes taking up parking spaces in the downtown area. wtf, who’s idea was that?

These people are useless... Need to take them to Europe and learn from cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna etc... the streets are waaaay tighter than in Canada but somehow the whole city is connected by specialized lanes for bikes... none of the worries about getting hit by traffic or having to stop for a dozen red lights like cars around you ><

Keep the bike lanes, just add some bear traps. :)
There are already "bear traps", in the way of potholes and other drivers who think cyclists have targets painted on their backs. When I got my licence I learned the rules of the road, and those lessons included how to share the road with other vehicles. This car vs. bicycle war isn't getting anyone anywhere. (Pardon the pun?)

Why can't bikes use non-arterial roads, like Parliament, instead of Jarvis? I say give them their own street so they stay the he'

Taking out the bikelanes will cost a lot, we have higher priorities. Bikes will still use the road if it's along their destination.

There's no reason why they can't, but a better question is why don't we just improve our transit infrastructure so that fewer people need to drive?

The price of gas isn't going down. This bike-vs-car war is going to be a moot point within 50 years and we might as well start planning for it now. People's habits WILL change as gas climbs in price relative to incomes. First it'll be smaller cars, but eventually, it'll be people trying to live nearer to work, working from home more often, and opting for alternatives to driving if they're convenient and available.

Cities should plan ahead.

The last few weeks my works has taken me to St Claire and Caledonia area. My first time since the completion of the transits lines were raised. What a cluster fuck. Then returning through Roncesvale and seeing their new plans for single lane vehicle traffic. Who thought of this shite?

But, there is a different mind-set in Europe when it comes to bikes and traffic. What works on one continent might no work on another.

It will cost like $48,000 to change it back.
Impossible.

Are you aware that your average signalized intersection costs $250,000 ?

Further, I believe during the election that Sweaty Bob Ford was claiming it was 6 million to convert it to bike lanes. If I recall, the cost to remove the lights and redo the paint was in fact 70 grand. So please, don't say it's going to cost 48 grand.

David Miller and his cabal of leftist councilors perspective has always been to make a war on cars and force people into the transit option. Adam Vaughan was one of his proponents. They did everything they could to make life difficult on drivers in Toronto.

Examples:

- Bike lanes on Jarvis.
- Removal of parking lots in the city and replacing them with condos without requiring builders to put in adequate guest parking or even Green P lots.
- Increasing parking enforcement and officers with the added bonus of revenue for the city.
- removing the eastern end of the Gardiner from the DVP to York St. The reason for this is because they think people do not make use of the port lands because the highway is a mental barrier. People do not access the port lands because there is really nothing there yet. Making them cross a 6 lane roadway isn't easier especially when there will be more traffic on it. "Studies indicate this will only increase travel times by 4-5 minutes" is complete BS. Ever seen when a highway ends? It's always a clusterfuck (see Allen Expressway at Eglinton). Now imagine that at the bottom of the DVP south, or the long line of cars turning left onto the DVP north from Lakeshore after a ball game. Nightmare. This one is still slated to happen. Btw this will cost us $300 million.
- St Clair TTC streetcar right-of-way.
- Car registration fee before Rob Ford got rid of it.
- Speed bumps and whatever else they can think of to make car use expensive, difficult and painful.

All I can say is thank god for Rob Ford.
