This has been a very hot topic in Red Sox Natioin since spring training. Contract talks broke off early because both Sox and Bay's agent (not Scott Boras, thankfully) felt that the market was too difficult to read at the time. Theo and company wanted to be completely fair with Bay, after seeing how some other contracts turned out. On one end there was Abreu, Ibanez, Burrell then at the opposite end there was Manny and Teixeira. Other than the Yankees, teams were not exactly throwing big money around.
Boston will not let Jason Bay get away. He has been a very nice fit on their ball club. At one point, Sox were thinking of $10-11 MM per season, however, with his stock rising nearly every day, it is now expected he will get somewhere in the $60MM for 4 years to $70MM for 5 years (which is JD Drew money and Bay is a whole lot better than Drew).
After the Mark Teixeira fiasco, if Theo does not get this done, he will need more than a gorilla suit to leave Fenway (that he wore a few years back). He will need an armoured suit.
Matt Holliday will be available, most likely at or before the trade deadline. Then he is a FA at seasons end. J.P. has a better chance of signing Lauren Bay. She is the sister of Jason and pitches for Canada's women's softball team.
