He must have been carrying that weight for a long time since that assistant went to him years ago claiming to have seen Sandusky raping a young boy in a shower.
IMO, a person in Paterno's position is smart enough to have known what was going on and should have taken the appropriate measures to have it investigated by the proper authorities.
When the final investigation and details are fully known and understood, the people who knew or were aware of Sandusky's behaviour/actions should be made accountable for thier lack of addressing the issue. The praise and fame that the American public bestows on these "heroes" should be replaced with public shame and the acknowledgement that any accomplishments achieved under the Penn State football program came at the cost of lives of several young men.

It is indeed tragic and to a certain degree of his own making that a man who seemingly lived out his own message which was both basic and consistent: honor, ethics and education will also be remembered for the Sandusky scandal
Even though the “winningist” University football coach, he was from a simpler time when University football was not a business. He remained humble and approachable to everyone on campus, he believed in stopping to smell the flowers, in looking at the foliage on the mountainsides, and in players’ rights. That obtaining an education and not an NFL contract was the goal of NCAA football.
How many football coaches when being honoured for a national championship publicly challenge the Board of Trustees to increase the academic standards of the University saying that the University needed a new library for "without a great library, you can't have a great university" and not only lead a fund drive to build that library, but gave millions of dollars to support academics at Penn State.
Not least he encouraged alumni/alumnae to take much more pride in Penn State than is true of many public universities.
