Caminiti died of drug overdose: report

October 15, 2004

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former all-star baseball player Ken Caminiti reportedly died of a drug overdose.

Sports broadcaster ESPN, quoting a New York police offical, reported as saying that preliminary results of Monday's autopsy showed the presence of drugs.

But medical officials said the exact cause of death wouldn't be known until the results of a toxicology report are examined which could take over a week.

Rick Licht, who is Caminiti's agent, reported earlier this week that the former National League Most Valuable Player died of a heart attack.

The 41-year-old Caminiti was pronounced dead at a hospital after collapsing at his New York apartment on Sunday.

Two years ago Caminiti revealed that he regularly used steroids during his star-studded 15-year baseball career. He has also battled alcohol and drug problems over the past few years.

Newsday reported earlier this week Caminiti told a friend he was "depressed" during the last day of his life.

Caminiti was handed a 180-day jail term just last week in a Houston court after he admitted using cocaine and violating his probation.
