Mama take this badge off of me
I cant use it anymore.
Its gettin dark, too dark for me to see
I feel like Im knockin on heavens door.

Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door
Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door
Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door
Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door

Mama, put my guns in the ground
I cant shoot them anymore.
That long black cloud is comin down
I feel like Im knockin on heavens door.

Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door
Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door
Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door
Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door

You're outta your mind - the original by the singer-songwriter is almost always the best. And it certainly is in this case... Dylan's last great song.

Yes the best version,is the first agreed mr honest historian, from Pat Garrett and BillY the Kid, and yes too, his last truely great song, where his voice was deep and soulfull.
He shoulda quit smoking then........lol
Although I adore Clapton,I think he peeked around Derek and the Dominoes,
his version doesn,t nail Knocking on Heaven,s Door as well as Cocaine.

Who else sings it with Dylan's passion and soulfulness? Every other version I've ever heard just sounds like someone going through the motions. I'll admit that I'm also biased because my dad introduced me to the original version.

As for the "last great song" that was simply because I was not a fan of the post-born-again Dylan. What Dylan songs in the last 30 years really stand out?

beats talking to yourself lol

case could be made for Shelter from the Storm,Tangled up in Blue, off Blood on the Tracks, but the bootlegs versions only he ruined them musically by rerecording

Knockin' On Heaven's Door--1973. Last great song?

More, you ask?

How about a whole album from 1974, Blood On the Tracks, which is arguably considered to be his greatest work and one of the greatest albums of all time, period.

Tangled Up in Blue
Simple Twist of Fate
Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts
If You See Her, Say Hello
Shelter From the Storm

Next year--1975

Hurricane
Isis

Also excellent albums produced by Daniel Lanois, "Oh Mercy" and "Time Out of Mind" leading into, most recently, "Love and Theft" and "Modern Times" all almost unanimously critically acclaimed.

Some people can still appreciate songs as being great even if the singer's voice is not at his prime or if the songs are not widely played on popular radio over and over and over again. There are also some that cannot.

For sure Dylan has changed and he's been inconsistent and many people didn't like his voice when he was in his 20's, but "last great song"? Please.

Gotta stop typing and wipe the tears from my eyes as I'm still laughing......last great song. What a hoot!

Check out Slash's solo on the live version, it's incredible!

GnR's version is better, and also Springsteen's Blinded By the Light is done better by Manfred Mann.

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion. I still contend Knockin' on Heaven's Door was Dylan's last great single (instead of "song" as I posted initially.)

"Hurricane" was not a good song (nice sentiment and all, but lame musically) and Blood on the Tracks was a great album without a standout single. Like I said, name a single that is as powerful as KoHD and then we can have a discussion if you can stop laughing.

And to all those that say Guns N' Roses... umm, ok.
(Even bigger rolleyes if that's possible - but again, it's just a matter of personal taste. I can't stand Axl Rose's voice and hated GnRs sound.)

Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen put you to sleep. I remember Dylan on the Grammy's a few years ago, and no word of a lie, you couldn't understand a single word he sang. I think I have it on tape somewhere.
