Last week I had to tie the trunk of the car down and wasn't all that successful. What are three knots a person should know to help them through life? I assume a slip-knot is one of them...?

Could you also tell me what particular situation(s) each knot would be good for.

This should help. Usually I do a lot a tying for fishing hooks and the often boat ... the best way to learn is when someone teaches you and you see it in front of your eyes otherwise I guess that this is the next best step.

At the range!!!
Trucker's Hitch - Tie things down (many ways)

Bowline - Makes a none slipping loop that cab be easily untied, no matter how tight (million uses)

square knot - joining two peices of rope togather

wreath knot- stitches (easy to do)

sheep shank - allows you to shorten a rope without cutting it.

the bowline is absolutely the most useful knot, followed by the sheet bend
