The NHL HAS to do something about these contracts. Kovalchuk will never complete his contract.

17 Years? What??? NO WAY!!!!!!

Surely there has to be some out clauses for the team if say, after the tenth year he is not producing...say 35 goals a year!

He is 27 for gawds sakes!!!

27 years old plus 17 years = 44 years old when done!!!!

I don;t care how good he is..he won;t be a ten million dollar man at 44!!

It's likely one of those BS front-loaded contracts that will pay him a nickel in the last, oh let's say, 10 years of the contract.

NHL contracts are not allowed to have options, or voidable years.

"Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal which could top $150 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside."

You are incorrect.

This Kovalchuck contract is supposed to be worth just north of $100,000,000.

The $150,000,000 figure is the total salary he will have earned in his NHL career when this contract is completed.

Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal worth slightly more than $100 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside, ending a three-week courtship that also included offers from the Los Angeles Kings. He was also pursued by the New York Islanders and SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. Should Kovalchuk play until the end of the deal, when he'll be 44, the source clarified that the forward will have earned more than $150 million as an NHL player, including his time with the Atlanta Thrashers.

He won't be playing the last 5 years. Just get paid half a mill to be on the books.

They must have changed/corrected the story since I posted it .... or my 'cut and paste' is playing tricks on me.

The Devils(or which ever team if he is traded) will have a cap hit of $6mil per season for as long as he plays. Once he retires, he comes off the cap.

No deal or signing is official until league says so. NHL has 5 days to review Kovalchuk signing.

Do not hold your breath for any kind of 'no' from the NHL. If they say no to this contract I think the Devils would cry foul.
See the several similar contracts. These contracts are why Chicago is in trouble now.

If the NHLPA grieves the leagues decision, the contract remains dead until an arbitrator decides otherwise.

I hope this is resolved soon. Its gonna slowdown other trades and signings until it isnt. I want a cap hit of atleast 8.5 for the devils.

Good move by the NHL.

Somebody has to save these owners from themselves, plain and simple.

I say let him go to the KHL if it's just about the $.
