The first moment the lock out is over the owners are trying to work around the system ????
NHL contracts are not allowed to have options, or voidable years.17 Years? What??? NO WAY!!!!!!
Surely there has to be some out clauses for the team if say, after the tenth year he is not producing...say 35 goals a year!
He is 27 for gawds sakes!!!
27 years old plus 17 years = 44 years old when done!!!!
I don;t care how good he is..he won;t be a ten million dollar man at 44!!
You are incorrect."Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal which could top $150 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside."

They must have changed/corrected the story since I posted it .... or my 'cut and paste' is playing tricks on me.You are incorrect.
This Kovalchuck contract is supposed to be worth just north of $100,000,000.
The $150,000,000 figure is the total salary he will have earned in his NHL career when this contract is completed.
Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal worth slightly more than $100 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside, ending a three-week courtship that also included offers from the Los Angeles Kings. He was also pursued by the New York Islanders and SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. Should Kovalchuk play until the end of the deal, when he'll be 44, the source clarified that the forward will have earned more than $150 million as an NHL player, including his time with the Atlanta Thrashers.
Do not hold your breath for any kind of 'no' from the NHL. If they say no to this contract I think the Devils would cry foul.DarrenDreger
No deal or signing is official until league says so. NHL has 5 days to review Kovalchuk signing.

See the several similar contracts. These contracts are why Chicago is in trouble now.
Don't count your chickens just yet.
