Lawyers call Scheer’s plan to combat gangs “shockingly stupid”, “unconstitutional” and full of “lies”
Harsh words for a ridiculous policy.

Lawyers have taken to Twitter to denounce Andrew Scheer’s plan to combat gangs and gun violence. One lawyer called it “shockingly stupid” and “unconstitutional”.
Scheer tweeted a graphic that claims to contain the Conservative plan to combat gang violence.
Andrew Scheer

@AndrewScheer
My Conservative plan to crack down on gang activity vs. Justin Trudeau’s plan that puts criminals first.

The response was swift and brutal.
Lawyer Kyle Morrow called it full of blatant lies, including the fact that automatic bail is not granted when arrested.

This graphic, by @andrewscheer, is full of blatant lies. For example, gang members are not "automatically" granted bail. They are arrested. They appear at a bail hearing. And—they are released only if the state fails to prove its case. #hoc #canpoli #cdnpoli

Lawyer and ex-Supreme Court Clerk Annamaria Enenajor called it “stupid” and that showed a clear “ignorance” about the criminal justice system.

WOW. This is shockingly stupid & unconstitutional. The only thing @AndrewScheer has illustrated through this infographic is his profound ignorance of the Canadian constitution & criminal justice system. #cdnlaw #cdnpoli

Lawyer David Russel called it unconstitutional and similar to Harper-era criminal justice.
David Russell
@Drusslaw
Advocating for a non-sensical, unconstitutional criminal justice policy is a Conservative right of passage. It would be less painful if most of the Harper policies weren't still alive, and only the courts, not Trudeau's govt, have overturned them.

What Scheer’s graphic fails to mention is any attempt to take away the weapons used by gangs. Scheer refuses to do anything about gun violence. Instead, he’s making up policy on the fly.
