if you read the Best Buy Canada and F/S websites they post things like tariffs, transportation costs, bilingual packaging etc as the reasons they can't price match the US which is a crock of shit. While it may take a little bit more design time, translation costs etc once you've spent that money, it doesn't cost any more to print the fricken packaging or instructions. For that matter most electronics come with spanish instructions in the US anyways so that doesn't fly.

Transportation costs is a crock too. it doesn't cost that much more to ship to Toronto from Buffalo. Sure there is a brokerage fee (couple of hundred per shipment but that equates to about 10 cents per unit on a trailer load).

I think it is greed, pure and simple. Canadian Retailers have been soaking us for years and now the tables are turned.

I agree, with comments previously that if I am not gonna go HD don't bother with the LCD. In the stores they are likely using Blue ray or HD signal for demo purposes so it would be misleading if I were planning to use just normal analog cable input.

So, with that said, how does the HD stuff work. Does Rogers have a bunch of programming in HD equivalent to the normal channels. How much do they charge extra for these channels. I guess I have to upgrade my digital terminal too. More cash right?

I also download a lot of content from torrent. I see some says HD so I am guessing thats the HD 1080p I need for best picture, right? If I play it through my computer with real player or whatever player will I actually see 1080p on the TV or does it get reduced somehow.

What about these free HD channels by antena. Hows that work.

All this stuff is not too clear.

Yes, the images you see in the store are HD. They may be using blu-ray now but before that was readily available they used an HD source such as an HD satellite signal.

Rogers: they offer an HD upgrade package that gives you (if memory serves) TMN MPIX HDDiscovery, HDHGTV and a bunch of others.

Now with that being said, the images are widescreen and cleaner than the standard stations but unless the content was shot in HD, it really isn't true HD.

To receive HD from rogers you will need an HD signal processor. They have PVR's and Cable boxes in std and HD.

As for the HD from your downloads. It may say HD but if it wasn't recorded or digitally stored keeping the 1080P resolution, it may not be. Just remember: just because it looks great on your pc doesn't mean it will look great on a 42" LCD. Remember: the 42" is probably double the size which means the pixels will be double the size also. If your computer monitor is 1280 x 1024 res and your LCD is the same, the LCD TV is using the same amount of pixels over a larger area so they will be larger.

Check here for general info on HDTV in Canada
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum

Quick answers to your questions:
-you need an HD terminal. Approx $10/mth to rent or $250 to buy ($550 for the HD PVR version). Sometimes the TV purchase will come with the first 12 months terminal rental for free.

-$3 monthly digital services fee , if you're not already paying it

-16 HD channels are free. There's enough HD content there to make it worthwhile, including all NFL games and most NHL games. There is an extended HD package for $7.95/mth that includes TSN, Discovery, A&E, HD Net. The extended package is usually included with the free 12 month terminal package if you get it.

-Most of your content from torrents is probably not HD. The true HD files are huge files (ts files?). I haven't tried recently but I think you'll need a special software player (VLC media player), a video card that can handle HD, DVI/HDMI connection from your PC to the TV. Check the forum above to research it further.

-HDTV free by antenna works but it's limited in channel content.

I notice that the 40" Sony LCD for $1799 at Future Shop, includes the Bluray player. Very good deal.

The Toshiba Regza 47" has an amazing picture and is a great value. I had a Vizio 47" in my living room as well as the Toshiba, and the Vizio does not come close.

Plasma and LCD going the way of the dinosaur

There is a new technology that is supposed to hit the U.S. market in Q4 2007.... SED TV It probably won't be here in Canada for another 3-6 months (unless you drive across the border and avoid the Canadian merchant pricing gouging)

Link http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/sed_tvs.htm

It is supposed to be brighter than LCD or Plasma, and will outlast them both (only 10% image drop after 60,000 hours). The first product being released is supposed to be a 55" model at full HD resulution (1920 x 1080) and priced similar to Plasma. No doubt it will really drive down the cost for LCD and Plasma as they will have stiff competition.

Sorry to learn about that! :( No doubt it will delay the release of the technology, which probably explains why I haven't heard much about SED TV so far this year. Hopefully the resolve it soon, as the technoogy is supposed to blow away LCD and Plasma.

Yeah, I was kind of turned on by the cooler, brighter, faster, lighter, more efficient prospects but as with all good things, we may have to wait for it.

What was more disturbing in one news article was that canon (or was it toshiba?) stated that they were not investing any more into ways of making LCDs and Plasmas cheaper.......

I thought a guy named Radio Shack would like brands like Tandy, Realistic, Gennexa or Optimus
Don't be silly. Tandy is THE brand for 8-track stereo players while Realistic makes CBs like no one else. Try Circuit City instead.
